Hi Mark,From the scant details provided, the best solution I can offer is that the back light has burned out. To verify this, turn on the monitor. Shine a bright flashlight at the screen. If you can see stuff on the screen, e.g. Desktop, boot sequence, anything else. That would confirm a problem with the back light. What most LCD monitors do is have a light behind them or along each side that make the screen shine. What normally happens is after a long time the tube burns out. if the system is only a couple of years old, then most likely the inverter that steps up the battery voltage to higher voltage to run the tube has failed. In either case, IF you can see a display with a flashlight, then you will most likely have to replace the display. You can buy a completely built one from emachines (now a gateway company) or if you have the skills, replace it yourself. I found on ebay new displays for under $100Sadly the other thing that happens fairly often now is that the graphics chip overheats and becomes "unsoldered" in which case you will have no display when shining a flashlight at the display. You can also confirm this by trying an external monitor. If you have another monitor for a desktop or if a friend does, you can plug in the monitor and see if you get a display. You may have to tell the laptop to use the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and the display function key. The display function key will have a picture of a monitor on it. Or you can look up the correct key sequence in the user manual which can be downloaded from emachines. so why not just assign the sleep mode, to auto sleep then on what does the power button do in settings, set to do nothing or set button to only sleep . (3 choices here) or let auto sleep do the work, set. set to say 5min idle. the switch is inside it deep and if you rip it out as you go there most noobs break 2 or 3 FFC cable jacks and now it is bricked and $300 mobo wrecked emachines or junk grade, made by Acer.com owned now and that maker does NOT have service manuals making service a royal Pain. best is work around the problem as I just told how. or ask any shop to fix it. they do know how.!!!

Check the hdd is setup correctly and set as first boot device. Ensure there is no external drive/usb installed.

NO COIN LASTED 13 YEARS. AND MOST HDD SAME THING.
