Software incompatibility. Files cannot be read unless converted to a file that your units can read.

sometimes there is nothing wrong with the camera, it is the disks themselves that can cause that error. I always use memorex or verbatim for disks, and there has never been an issue with them. some of the lower priced disk, like sandisk and lg disks sometimes have an encoding error in manufacture that causes the drives to not read them.

No I doubt that it will be the fact that the "video was not finalized" (sic) It is more likely that the HDD has faulted. It may be able to be rescued, by reformatting? It is more likely the HDD has failed?
You will in this case have to take the unit into an authorised service center and ask for a "Quote' before commencing any repairs. This way you can decides to repair or replace.
One can replace a HDD oneself, if technically capable. If this is what you wish to do, there are tutorials on the net to assist.

is camera ntsc or pal format..if not pal pc won`t see it(only a guess)

You will need a video capture card to transfer the video from your cam to the PC you can buy a external or internal capture card for this purpose from the link below but I will recommend you to buy it from local store because if something goes wrong in the future you can contact the local shop which is much easier than contacting online shops...

You can finalize the DVD using a computer and a software like Nero.

What OS are you using? are you using XCOPY or XCOPY32 to copy the contents of the disk over? Try to use an ISO Image Creator like MagicISO(Shareware), or the Nero Application Suite(Not Free) or WinImage(Freeware).

9 out of 10 is the dvd loader/ dvd mech. With these is no easy(cheap) repair. Usualy the set is a write of becouse of the price of the spares

I have actually seen a lot of problems with this model camera and this happening. Your only chances are sending the dvd into an expert to try and do it. As there is no way to recover the data yourself when this error occurs. I would get a different camera. This is another one of the reasons I do not recommend DVD camcorders. You are much better off with miniDV.

Well you might neeed to rplace it. Just rememver when you get the new one to not drop it becase devises like this are sensitave.

I had the same problem and tried for ages (even tried forcing the door open thinking I could just tape it shut) without luck.
Then my very clever wonderful husband had a go (I know i'm crawling and yes my knees hurt).

Any way to the relevant bit. If you hold the eject button down and at the same time slide a knife or similar object round the edge of the door where the screw is near where it says photo/select you'll find that the door opens as this is an override mechanism.

I think I had a similar problem with my new Panasonic DVD camcorder. Even though I had finalised the RAM disc the PC could not read the disc but could see it. I tried drag & drop into a new folder on my PC. I then renamed the video files by changing the ending to .VOB.
I could then open & play these files in Power DVD. Using software downloaded from the internet I converted the VOB files into AVI and could then use PINNACLE to edit them into a holiday movie/DVD. Some software will enable editing/reading of VOB fileswithout converting to AVI but as I am familiar with PINNACLE I just stick with what I know! Bit laborious but it worked for me.
I still prefer my mini dv camcorder - firewire works perfectly & direct into PINNACLE software for editring..

if you get a disc error, DO NOT TRY TO REPAIR the data.

When you get a disc error, turn the camera off, turn the camera back on. When prompted to repair the data, select NO.

The camera should prompt you to Format the disk, select no.

you should go back to a normal camera screen, at this point push the FINALIZE button on the outside of the camera to finalize the disc.

This is your only option to save the data.

Never try to repair the bad data, it never works.

I have done this on two occasions, and it worked both times.

If that does not work, you can take it to your local Geeksquad/Bestbuy and they can work on the camera for you. Otherwise, you might also call Hitachi directly to ask them about the nearest repair shop that you could send the camera to. Thank you.
