Hi,
Remove the batteries wait a few minutes. Put fresh batteries back in and turn the camcorder on. This resets the camcorder.
Take the memory card out and copy the files from the memory card to computer.

This should be possible via the USB connector. Install the software that came with the camcorder and check the manual to see if there are any settings required on the camcorder to enable the USB interface.

Try a TRUETECH DVR...a little smaller than the standard sixe DVRs....there is also a device you can order from China ($99) called a JXD-90 mpv player that holds 5 to 10 hours of video. The last item that I know of is called a firestorm....($1000...80GB Memory). Best to you.

What happens when you press the "Record" button again (to stop recording)? Ca you power it off then?

There is a way to get back those deleted video files from your digital camcorder, BUT it is just possible. Because if those deleted files has been overwritten by new files you saved in, then there is no hope. However usually overwritten cases are hard to happen as long as the memory card or hard disk has enough volume.

Then, take so called data recovery program to handle the issue and see if you can grab some or all of the deleted files back. Here are some recovery software you may take a try.

If you are running Windows, try this video photo recovery program.
If you are using Mac OS X, turn to this Mac photo video recover software.

You should take care - before your files are recovered, do not save more files to the device concerned(do not take more videos or photos) in case overwritten situation will happen.

You can recover but it's not 100% sure unless those deleted videos are not fully overwritten(if you continue to take ).

First of all, DO NOT take any more videos with the memory card or stick that you want to recover from in case you may quite possibly ruin your chances of video recovery.

Then take some video recovery software to see if you can recover some or all of your deleted videos. Take the software and see?
If you are running Windows, turn to this video photo recovery software.
If you are running Macintosh, refer to this Mac data recovery program.

Just install the program on your computer, then connect your cam memory card and start to the scanning process.

Lastly you should remember - Do NOT try & write anything back to your Nikon memory card until you can recover your pictures to safely!

the camcorder has a build in very fragile hard drive, if the camera has ever been dropped theres a chance the hard drive has *Crashed* it does have suspension and a gravity sensor to turn off the hard drive, but it is not a guarantee that the camcorder and the hard drive would survive a drop or a hit etc.

from what you have written it sounds like its trying to read the hard drive in the view mode, but is unable to, and it keeps trying, it is stuck on a loop of repeatedly trying to read the hard drive and won't evern turn off, listen to the camcorder do you hear steady humming or clicking?

take it to the shop and ask for a refund
