Won't power up and fuses inside are good. What's wrong? Worth fixing?

You can get the service manual free online. Just type your model number and the words "service manual". From what I've seen it has a test mode you could try. There's also a thermal fuse on the transformer, which you might not have seen. I have the earlier version of this model the 602 and if yours is like mine it certainly is worth fixing. I suspect the only time these things are not worth the money is when the massive chip inside them goes. But I don't think that has gone in your case. If you have any problems getting the service manual comment below and I will send it you.

The Vol button on my Onkyo RC-588M remote doesn't work

It probably can be fixed. Dirt and such gets on the contact pads...take it apart by carefully unscrewing it and remove the top half with the buttons facing you. You will likely see that the buttons are made of molded sheet of silicone, lift that off. Beneath where the mold was for the volume control you will see the actual buttons that control the volume, inspect it to see if it simply got pressed down too far and try to operate it that way and clean anything that needs it while you have it open. If it works without the silicone button cover panel on it, then you can take a small peice of paper wad and tuck it into the mold for the volume button so that when you press on it, it always makes contact.

Wenth i turn ti on ti say protecte

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

My TX-SR702 receiver often displays a 'Dialog

Need to know your source and exactly how that source is connected to the receiver. Also need to know what surround sound mode you are using and whether the program material that drops out is compatible with that decoding format. Might be as simple as changing surround modes when this happens, but you should know that many cable boxes and some disc players routinely drop their digital audio signals from time to time and can give you these symptoms. Best remedy is to call Onkyo tech support with all of your information requested above documented in one place. They can help you troubleshoot while you are in front of your receiver.

So what you're saying is you think the receiver is broken because the remote won't turn it on.

Onkyo tx-sr702 sound cuts out when pausing, then

That would be a function of your Cable/DVR dropping its digital bitstream output, wouldn't it?

My Pioneer does the same thing when I switch channels on my cable box or ANY sources. The receiver has to resync with the new bitstream, buffer it, figure it out and sort out the audio channels. Sounds like normal operation to me.

No sound

The unit is in protect mode until then. What needs to be determined is why it takes that long for the system to settle down. Basically, there are circuits built in to prevent faults from causing damage to external devices like speakers. These circuits prevent the output section from turning on until all of these voltages are correct. If you recall from a long time ago, it was common for the speakers to produce a loud pop when the receiver was first turned on. These circuits prevent that (as one example).

This unit should be brought to a service shop as it will require signal tracing to determine the faulty component. This is not likely to be diagnosed remotely through a forum like this.

Good luck and keep us posted.

0-83 error on onkyo tx nr 555

The 0-83 error indicates a problem with the firmware update. Try resetting the receiver's BIOS by following these steps2: Unplug all cables Un-Power the receiver Power the receiver Before the receiver gets into the "Enter for updating" message, press Tone + CBL/SAT + ON/STANDBY. This will show you either the volume numbers or get you into settings of the receiver's speaker configuration. Press CBL/SAT + ON/STANDBY. This will clear the BIOS and show a "Clear" message on the display. Wait until you hear a couple of clicking sounds for the receiver to turn on and off the power.
