Needle won't pick up bobbin
Try a new needle, and make sure that the flat side faces the rear of the machine. I am hoping that it is not your timing. You can also call Singer at 1-800-4singer customer service. Good luck.

I'm not too sure on 'correct' terminology - but
I think that it needs professional help. Call Singer at 1-800-4singer and ask customer service, they can tell you what to do, If, you have a warranty, they may cover it. If not, the worst is that you have to pay to get it working again. Sometimes, you yearn for the good old mechanical machine with no bells and whistles.

You may have thought that your machine was threaded right but it cannot have been. It has to have a problem with your thread or your needle. I never in 50+ years of sewing heard of the thread looking like shoe lacing. Hopefully you didn't mess up the timing because you will have to have it professionally repaired, not a do it yourselfer. Try totally rethreading, put in a 80 or size 14 needle and hope that it works ok. Also, check your manual clean and oil it. I have my fingers crossed for you that maybe that is all you need to do.

It sounds like you may have to do a like more than just turning it to the buttonhole icon. Do you have your manual? If not go to
www.sewingmanuals.com and download one for $10 or go to Singerco.com and buy one for $15. I like the download because you have it right away and you print it out and download it, save it on computer so you cannot misplace it. Also you can enlarge the diagrams on the computer, which is great for old eyes like mine. They use paypal so it is a safe site. Good luck. I am answering you for free, there are some answers that charge and maybe they will be better, but I like for everyone to have their manual because usually answers all of your questions not just one. All I have is 50+ years of sewing experience I am not a professional

Check your needle and make sure it is not bent, needles should be replaced after about 8 hours of sewing and that they are the right size for your project. Also use the same weight of thread, do not mix ie. cotton or polyester. Then check your threading, did some thread get tangled? Or sneak out of a guide? Hope this helps.

I need the proper instructions
You can try a whole new needle, inserted with the flat side facing away from you. Sometimes a burr or slight bend causes you to miss stitches. I would not attempt to set the timing myself as you may cause some damage. You can also call Singer customer service at 1-1800-4singer and they can advise you. Be very cautious of advice on the internet.

Hi i have a singer 7422, and have a problem with
Hi. Take the current needle out of the needle clamp and see if there's a bit of thread or lint caught up in the needle clamp. Replace the needle and see if that cures the timing problem. It's really pretty rare that the timing actually needs adjustment unless you've had a fairly major accident, like driving the needle into the presser foot, etc. It's more common that the needle isn't sitting up far enough in the needle clamp.

Threading
could be the timing. check your needle first. Use a new needle and see if that helps. Make sure it is installed with flat side in proper place. Make sure it is correct length.

Loose thread and missing stitches
Could be one of two things, or both - install a new needle (flat side of needle shaft to the back of the machine) and re-thread the machine, putting the presser foot in the up position first.

Bobbin tension is too loose
"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.
