My machine is less than a year old and intermitently decides to jam after just a few stitches. It appears that the upper thread is getting caught somewhere below the needle plate and wrapping around multiple times until the needle can no longer move. When this happens the machine stops very suddenly. I've adjusted upper and lower thread tension with no success. At first cleaning and oiling the hook fixed the problem, but that doesn't seem to help any more. Is it possible that my tension adjuster is broken? I'd love to try any ideas you can share! singer 5525 sewing machine knots up thread on underside of fabric after three stitches
most commonly this is from incorrect threading top thread. Check manual for threading path or follow threading path usually marked by arrows on machine

How do I raise and lower the feed dog on my singer 8280??
On your Singer, you don't actually raise / lower the feed dog. Instead you attach a "darning plate" (which should have come with the machine) which covers the feed dogs so they do not come in contact with the fabric. See a page from the owner's manual using this link within my web site: http://www.sewvac1.com/Singer3080_Feed_Drop.pdf

Is it safe to use WD40 oil to lubricate my singer 648?
Hi. No, don't use WD40 oil to lubricate your Singer. Use sewing machine oil--it's a whole different breed of animal than WD40 and won't hurt your machine. You can easily find sewing machine oil at Jo-ann's, Hancock's, or any other local fabric and/or craft store. It's not expensive, but repairing the insides of a machine gummed up from WD40 IS!
Good luck and let me know how this works.

how do I drop the feed dog on a singer sewing machine 8280
They do not drop.
The accessories with this model include a darning plate, which is a plastic shield that snaps over the feed dogs.
If you cannot find the darning plate, poke a hole for the needle in the center of an index card and tape it over the feed dogs with blue painter's tape (does not leave a residue) and set the stitch length to zero.
Be sure to use a darning foot and lower the presser foot.

How do I oil my singer 8280?
You oil the shuttle.
Page 40 of the manual shows where to oil.
Make sure to use clear sewing machine oil.
If you do not have a manual you can download (free) from Singer at this site - http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

top thread breaking especially when machine in reverse.
try this
The machine is not threaded correctly--rethread the machine
The thread tension is to tight--reduce the thread tension (lower number)
The thread is to thick for the needle--select a larger needle
The needle is not inserted correctly--remove needle & reinsert the needle (flat side toward the back)
The thread could be wound around the spool pin
The needle is damaged--replace
Some needles & thread are not compatible--try this
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

On my Singer 8280, the thread stitches are very loose. I've tried adjusting the tension of the upper and below thread. No change, still loose stitches. Any ideas? I wonder if I broke and internal part?
The most common cause of this is improper threading.
1. Thread the upper thread properly with the presser foot in the UP position.
2. Make sure the bobbin is threading with the thread unspooling in the correct direction.
3. Make sure the needle and thread are suitable for the fabric in your project.
