From the description of the problem, it seems that the Audio driver for your computer has not been installed.
To resolve this issue, you will have to install the Audio driver from the original drivers disc which is supplied along with the computer.
Hope this solves your problem. For more help and clarifications, please feel free to reply to this post with more details (complete model number of the computer and motherboard)
You shouldn't need drivers. The only thing you can update on your drive would be the firmware. What exactly are you trying to do? If you're talking about burning music/videos/data then you need programs such as nero. Which comes free with most CD/DVDRW's now.
assuming this is a new drive and not second hand and possibly faulty, when you fitted it into the pc, if you connect it to the same IDE cable as the hard drive or another connected drive on the same IDE channel, ensure that the jumpers on the back of the writer, next to where you connect the IDE cable are set to slave, as your hard drive or other drive will be the master.
If you have connected the drive to and ide cable on it's own then the jumpers on the back should be set at master.
Some drives also can use CS (Cable select) but not often.
