This issue is caused by fiedd of view angle and means that the lens is not compatible with the camera. You can set the F-stop higher and sometimes reduce that effect.

You might also visit your local library or bookstore and browse through the photography section. There are plenty of books on introductory photography, introductory DSLR photography, and other topics. The manual does a great job of explaining what each of the controls do, but doesn't do so great a job of explaining why you'd want to change these things. It's like the owner's manual for a car: you wouldn't want to learn how to drive just by reading it.

And most important: go out and take pictures! You're not paying for film and processing, so take a lot of pictures and look at them on your computer. Experiment, see what the different settings do.

It is almost 20 years old and I expect get used infrequently causing electronic issues.

I do not use a program to transfer photos. I typically take the memory card out and access it directly, in some cases, with an adapter. I will always back up photos before I delete them. I then delete the photos off the memory card.

Question edited for clarity. It is a *lens, not 'lense'. The model is a D3300. When you look at something with your eyes, the field of view is around 35mm, so a lens that covers that is useful. Then at the higher end a 85mm to 210mm zoom cover the higher end. From what I gather, it's supposed to only show when the shutter button is halfway depressed, so I'm inclined to think you have a shutter button sticking, or some crazy thing like that. Here's a similar problem as answered on Nikon's support site:

It could just be some tricky menu setting messing you up. I would run the camera by a reputable repair shop, just to see if they can reset it, etc.

Try the White Balance settings. There are 59 references in the manual. Open the link, Press CTRL+F and type ' white balance ' and scroll through. If that doesn't fix it, it will need service.
