Dead tv

Repaired dead Polaroid TDA-03211C

I fixed a dead Polaroid TDA-03211C for my friends. When it failed it had just been turned on and then it went totally dead. This unit is a little over a year old and out of warranty. When I inspected the power supply it was continuously trying to start up but could not. With a Fluke meter you could see some of the DC output voltages rapidly rising and falling, but never getting to normal levels. I pulled the power supply thinking some of the capacitors were bad. Once I had the power supply out I used the Ohmmeter to check for any open or shorted diodes and/or transistors. To my surprise I found a shorted diode! I figured it would be the capacitors (typical failure in switchers), however they looked OK (not leaking goo or puffed out) and the TV is not that old. The failed diode (sorry I forgot to get the circuit designation) is a HER-304 (near the middle of the board with the cathode lead soldered to a small silver colored heatsink). The HER-304 is a 300 Volt, 3.0 Amp High Efficiency Rectifier in a DO-27 package. The DO-27 package is cylinder shaped with axial leads, 0.375" (9.5mm) long and 0.197" (5mm) in diameter. This diode is for the 20 volt source and is connected to one of the secondaries of the transformer. On eBay I found a vendor selling five (5) HER-305 (400 Volt units, better than the original) for $1.25 plus $7.95 shipping. Also I checked most of the Capacitors with a Sencor Z-meter, all that were check were OK. If a Cap. had another in parallel with it I did not check the other. I removed (un-soldered) the heatsink from the board and then the diode from the heatsink. I put it all back together and Yes, under $10.00 in parts (actually a $0.25 part) and a little time and the TV works again! 24 July 2009.

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!! Switch mode power supplies such as this use and generate voltages at current levels that can be LETHAL!!! If you DO NOT know what you are doing, find someone that does or buy a new TV, it is not worth dying for!!!

Polariod LCD FLM3732 does not show picture but has power

Its possible that you have some bad Electrolitic Capacitors. They are a very easy fix and very easy to see if they are bad. I have some vids posted on youtube on the fix for this. It only costs a few dollars to do. Just search on youtube for flm3732 repair or go right to my channel youtube.com/raider2845 and watch the 5 short vids I had posted.

Blue light is on no picture, dissconected the power

G'Day!

Unfortunately, what you're describing is a repair issue. You won't be able to address the problem with troubleshooting. There is a part inside the TV that needs to be replaced. If you're under warranty, this will cost you nothing. If you're not under warranty the cost will likely be a minimum of $200 parts and labor. However, be warned that the cost could be considerably higher.

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today.

Please post a comment if you need additional assistance so that I can help you further.

The picture and sound stopped a few days ago

Try leaving the TV unplugged for 30 minutes so the TV can reset itself.
If that doesn't work, most likely the TV has a power supply related problem.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

The following link posted by stiv0 gives detailed instructions on how to replace the two capacitors that commonly go bad on this TV. When these capacitors go bad they prevent the TV from turning on. However, you still get a red light when you plug it in. Since your not getting a red light I'm not sure this fix will work for you. I'd open up the TV and see if the capacitors are bulged out as described in stiv0 post. If they are I'd go ahead and replace them and give the TV another try. This fix is fairly easy to do and very inexpensive so you don’t have much to lose.

My polaroid hdtv turns on but there is no picture on the screen

Hey dugout3773, Your complaint stated above is fairly good for a consumer. Get back to me with these other items. How old is unit? Approximate " ON/OFFs" it has under gone. (350/yr is typical) Did you have a "perfect" picture and sound the day before? Because I'm just an Industrial technician working for company dealing with electronics hardware/software for the gaming industry (add-on lcd displays and comm circuits for casinos) I don't know the type of technology you bought. Is it an LCD/FPD or a true PLASMA Screen set. If you are sure that it is LCD type with fluorescent backlighting try shinning a very bright flashlight onto the front of the screen at different angles and let me know if you can see any hint of an image even though the screen seems to be totally lifeless. If you see an image displayed, at least part of the low voltage power supply is working and powering up the circuits that do video and sync processing and are able to send it to the lcd. 14in-25in and larger lcd displays use long thin straight cold-cathode-fluorescent tubes to generate white light to enable viewing of the lcd image. The lighting technology is similar to new light blubs, Compact Fluorescent light bulbs. Both types need a power conversion ballast circuit to light them. If the (ELECTRONIC BALLAST) called an INVERTER (low volt 12-24v dc to 800-1200v ac) fails you wont be able to light the screen. Well anyway being a consumer, you have only a couple of options open to you. Call up Polaroid and see if they do swapout+a cash donation to them. They in turn ship u a refurbished set of same model. Next try to find some local TV/computer monitor guy who knows all about flat screen repair and CCF tubes and inverters/ power supplys. You can get back to me at louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel @aol.com BYE for now.

H2O44 HI I HAVE FLM-4701

This sound like a problem with the televisions main board tuner section. The problem may be expanded solder connections to the ground. This expansion is caused by the heating and cooling of the circuit board as the television is being used. The heating causes the joint to expand and when cooled after the expansion the joints cannot contract properly due to the over expansion.this causes the connections to fail. This would cause the distortion and buzzing sounds coming from the television, due to the loss of the grounding contact. This unit should be taken to a service center for a complete testing and servicing for intermittent operation. The Polaroid customer support telephone number is 1-866-289-5168. Call them and tell them the model number of you television and the problem you are having with the intermittent video operation. They will be able to tell you where you can take or send your television for service. I hope this information helps you with your problem.
