Hi.
To start, as a qualified technician I would discourage users from repairing their TV unless they have a solid technical knowledge and experience repairing electronic.
The burnt capacitor story for example is a kind of Internet urban legend , that got popular thanks to the fact that a melting capacitor is a kind of fault that can be easily be spotted by any user without even grabbing a multimeter.
Even if a leaking capacitor is a fault that may happen on this or other TV, melting capacitors are NOT the most common fault on a TV (plasma or any kind), and there is a huge number of faults that can cause troubles on this kind of device.
The tons of complaints that you see on the internet are there just because owners use the internet when something with the TV is wrong. They post less when their Akai TV is working fine.
Akai plasmas are not known for scarce reliablility.they can fail like any other TV. If you put a popular brand known for being very reliable like Sony, you still will find a huge number of faults registered on Sony TVs and listed on the Web.
The PSU board is one of the most expensive parts on this set. RRP is about $400, here one from Sears at $192:
Part# BN96-00249AMore parts for this set available here. Here a service manual Akai TV. Most schematics are the same.
Regards.
