Hotpoint RVM1635 Microwave Oven - Page 2 Questions & Answers
When you plug in the microwave you have a humming
It sounds like the cook relay on the control circuit board is shorted and it's cooking when it shouldn't.
With the model number, we can offer more specific advice or an estimate.
But since FixYa does not notify us experts of follow-ups, you will need to post a new help request.
Carbon filter
If it is vented back into the room a filter is necessary, otherwise it just circulates the steam and cooking odors into the room. The unit is not sold with a carbon filter because it is not known if it will be vented outside or not. I'm not sure where the least expensive place to purchase one is.
How do I adjust the power levelthen start the
Press "Power" until you get to the level you want. Then enter the # of minutes on the keypad (CANNOT use express cook times.) An alternating runnig hum will let you know the setting is working.
HOW DO YOU REPLACE MEGATRON IN GE SPACESAVER 1400
We have a service manual which covers many of these type microwaves and have uploaded it them to our site here to help you.
There
should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.
At
our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Same problem but without the noise!
You probably have a bad magnatron tube. this is the heart of the system and works by exciting the molecules to heat. If you don't hear the tell tell buzzing noise then it is the mag tube. They can be costly to replace
If the timer, lights, menu, etc, all work, but the tube does not turn on (the typical power noise), could it possibly be a problem with the interlock from the door/handle when it is closed?? (the safety switch that keeps the magnetron from exciting the water molecules in the skin on your face/hands and your eyes)?? Its in the housing where the door latch inserts. Just a thought as I have seen the same prob, but if the tube sounds like it goes on (usually the lights may slightly dim from a tube's power drain to help indicate that this is the case), then your tube may not be fully functional, if at all.
LG Microwave does not heat
I would suspect the magnetron as well. But take that HV Diode somewhere. It's the cheapest part! (A local TV shop may have a low ohm meter to check it out with as well as an appliance shop)Here is what I tell people on replacement. If the cost of the replacement part(s) PLUS labor time costs exceed 50% of the cost of the unit, get a new unit. It holds true with all our "throw away electronics. A shame too. On the question regarding the Ebay purchase, personally, I would never trust a part sold on Ebay as a "New" fresh off the shelf part. They are usually New, stale off the shelf, perhaps dropped a few times, scratch and ding parts. In electronic components, that usually does not phase them. Larger electronic devices like magnatrons, it may. Shop smart. Find appliance part dealers near you first. Once something electronic is sold on Ebay, it's yours, wether it works or not. Especially if it's imported.

Powers on, rotates- but does not heat
Thanks for mentioning that growling sound, which is a classic clue to a bad mag, though not all bad ones make that sound. Sounds like someone growling into a coffee cup! *grin*
For this job, the unit will probably have to be taken down from the wall mount. I recommend 2 people for that job. A spotter, if you will.
When replacing the magnetron, it's very important to be sure the new one has the wire mesh "washer" (RF gasket) around the antenna which sticks out the top. If it's not on the new one, use the one from the old mag. Very important.
Also, you should really discharge the high voltage capacitor.
This case also illustrates an interesting thing about part prices:

Microwave power level
The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a minute, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.
If you don't have your owner's manual, you can
download it free from GE/Hotpoint.

Peeling paint
The only real danger is if it continues, it can deteriorate the metal, allowing sparking and possible leakage.
It's a good idea to clean, sand, clean again and repaint the area.
High temperature appliance paint is available form stores like Lowe's and Wal-Mart.

Hotpoint OTR Microwave - Carousel Motor Noise
You should be able to access the turntable motor if you remove the left side filter under the microwave. Disconnect the power, remove the left filter and look up inside that area, the motor may have a cover or plate over it, if so remove it, the motor will be held in with 2 screws (usually) and there will be 2 quick disconnect wires attached to it. If you cannot get to it that way you may have to remove the bottom of the microwave (underneath), should be only 3 to 5 screws holding it in place, the side to the wall will be hinged, once you pull the screws just let it hang or swing down away from you. Then follow the above directions. Make sure that you are getting the correct motor, there are two types, one is a square shaft (WB26X10037) and the other is a "D" shaped shaft (WB26X10038).
Above range microwave
According to the installation instructions for this model, the distance from the cooktop surface to the bottom edge of the cabinet (and thus the top of the microwave) must be 30" or more.

Microwave
If it sounds like it's coming from the cooking cavity it may be grease or food particles on or behind the waveguide cover.
If you turn the room lights out and try it, you may see some sparks to help you locate the trouble.
It could also be a problem in the high voltage section, such as a bad diode or loose conneciton.
Not pleasant to think about, but more than once we've found a dead "intruder" inside the high voltage section.
Please write back with more details if you need further help.
