Will not boot. Keeps looking

It appears to be a Sata drive.
See if you can see it in the Bios setup screen.

The most common way to enter setup is to press DEL after turning the power on.
Watch the screen, other instructions may be given.

If it is found in Bios
It has no partition created on it.
It does not have a bootable partition.
In this case windows setup should identify it and start installatio.

If it is not found in bios
It has no data connection, make sure it is properly connected.
It has no power. Again, check the connection, Check that both 5V and 12v are presemt
It is faulty.

How to make my WD

There is a small grid of pins near the "data" and "power" connectors on the end of the disk-drive. Look closely; those pins should be labelled:
* MA(ster)
* SL(ave)
* C(able)S(elect)

Move the small jumper to the 'SL' position.
Connect the power and the data cables.

The ticking is the reading head trying to read the data. Since it fails that means that the hard disk has died. This is unfixable and all the data on it is lost. Just take it out and replace it.

Hi i have a western digital wd1600 160gb hard

Have you tried setting the jumpers on the new drive to CS (cable select) If you use that setting, the position of the drive on the cable determines whether it is master or slave. For example, the plug at theend of the IDE cable is the master and the plug in the middle of the cable would be slave. Just a suggestion. If you are using SATA, this does not apply.

Does the HD spin up? Take care not to confuse with the other noises in the case. The best way is to unscrew the HD from the case and hold it with your hand for a while in order to feel the spin up. If the HD does not spin up, sorry to said, don't waste your time with this particular disk. If you have valuable data, ask for hard disk recovery service at your area.

Morning how do I retrive data from a failed hard

Retrieving data from a failed harddrive can be very difficult and often expensive. If the failure is a result of an overheating motor, one way that I've been able to do it is by putting the harddrive in a sealed plastic bag and putting it in the freezer for 1 hour. Immediately place it in your computer and fire it up. If it works, recover your datat quickly has it will fail again as soon as the motor overheats.

That being said, if this data is absolutely critical, do NOTHING to try and recover it and send it in for professional data retrieval. I say this as any recovery efforts on your own may possibly damage your harddrive further.

I have used Seagate's data recovery service (all makes and models accepted), but be ready to spend quite a bit ($800+). That isn't much if the data is critical.

Unplug your computer.
On the end of the disk-drive, there is three-by-two grid of gold pins, labelled MA(ster), SL(ave), and C(able)S(elect). Move the jumper to the 'CS' position.

Start your computer.
Press DEL to enter BIOS SETUP.
Use "auto detect IDE drives", and the 160GB drive should be recognized.
