My harmon kardon avr 240 7.1 receiver has been

Without a schematic, you can take it apart and look around, and check any fuses you find. Sometimes, fuses are used in the form of "fusible links", which are very low ohm resistors in the input circuits to amplifiers, or in the power feeds to them. They're hard to identify without a schematic since they look like a small, metal film resistor, but they're usually about 1 ohm. If you're good at the resistor color coding, you can read and measure any you suspect as being one, and possibly locate it.
Otherwise, sometimes the main transistors in that amplifier circuit can go bad, or some other discrete component. In that case, you have to get a schematic and oscilloscope to figure it out.
Find your output to the front main speakers, and try to identify the part of the circuit that leads to it, to help narrow your search.
If this doesn't work, it will, unfortunately, have to be serviced. Check with a local tv repair shop, or contact Harman Kardon Support:
Hopefully, you will find a bad fuse or link.
Good luck, and hope this helps

Can hear sound but no picture

You didn't mention what the source was or how it was connected or if you were using analog or digital connections.
It appears that the device (cable box, maybe??) is assigned to different inputs for audio and video.
The solution should be really simple.
Kind of odd for this to just "happen", but it might have something to do with static electricity or a small power surge. Your first remedy should be to unplug the H/K receiver for 30 seconds and plug it back in. This should reset any logic hiccup.

The AVR's manual will show you how to assign video inputs and audio inputs to specific devices. You'll do this differently, depending on what cables you are using and how you have set up the source device, but the instructions do tell you how to make this work.
Basically, you'll need to know what button on the AVR you want to use to select this source. Then in the AVR's menu, you'll need to tell the receiver which of its inputs should be selected when that source button is pressed. Look closely at the back of the receiver and see where you have connected the cables. Your solution might be to simply move the audio and or video cables on the back of the receiver to jacks with the same labels!
For instance, if the video cables are connected to the receiver's video-1 jacks and the audio cables are connected to its video-2 jacks, just make them both the same.

Fiber Optic input

No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

HK AVR-247 protect mode

This is an indication of an internal problem. Typically this is shorted output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $25-$40 range for this repair.

Turns itself to protect mode every two seconds

Check your speaker cables!!!! specially at the terminals. Which speakers are you using? Try the speakers with another amp. OR try without connecting the speakers. If it dosen't turn off then the speakers or the cable is defective

My receiver stays in standby mode and will not

Unplug the unit from power and wait at least five minutes. Plug it back in and try it. If that does not work check your operating manual to see if there is a reset that can be performed. This would do a "factory reset" which would hopefully solve the problem. Good Luck!
