Celestron CG-5 Mount Telescope Questions & Answers
Cg5 gt dec motor broken
Can you hear the motor running even though the axis does not move? If it is, then all that is possibly needed is to realign the motor on its mounting with the driven gear of the axis. This situation is not uncommon in the CG5. Here is a site with a lot of links and information
http://www.astronomyboy.com/cg5/If the motor is not running at all, it may be the motor has failed, or more likely, the motor controller circuit board has failed. There is a lot of stuff on the Net about that and it seems spare parts are getting hard to find. In that case you may have to return it to a Celestron dealer. The problem has also arisen before here on Fixya, so you could examine those posts as well

I have a C8-SGT (XLT) Computerized Telescope, just
Hi,
I assume you mean you have set tracking on by:
Setup key, scroll to Set Tracking, select Sidereal Rate, press EnterThis should get tracking going for celestial objects.Another possibility, if the mount is not tracking well, is that polar alignment is not very precise. This will immediately show up when doing a 3-star alignment.Cheers
CG5 is brand new-not 30days old yet. Mount slews
You should return the scope under warranty-- however a bad power supply-- and or a bad hand controller cable can cause these symptoms called a "runaway slew".
Get a separate 12 volt power supply and the proper cigarette lighter style power plug.
CG5 mount- no power either
This is known issue with these mounts. The little on-off power switch breaks- you will either need to send it back to Celestron or open it up and have someone install a new switch.
Most of us never use the switch-- we just plug--- and unplug the power cable.
I have a CG5 mount.
Yes this is a known issue. Most of us just leave it TURNED ON all the time and just unplug the power.
Just leave it turned on.
Hello, I need the worm declination
You can call any Celestron dealer for parts, or contact Celestron.

Need dimensions for CG-5 cinch-down bolt
Don, if you mean the handscrew that retains the mount in the hub, I believe that it's a common 10mm. Should be able to get one a big box hardware. I have seen CG-5s with the hole bored out and retreaded to 1/2NC to mount on a Meade HD Field Tripod. HTH, Geo.
Can't release RA axis manually
I had one come in like this. AS you say the RA axis should be free to rotate in the RA housing when the clutch lever is released. The cylinder that the worm is machined on is binding on the axle. This doesn't overly effect normal tracking, but makes gross adjustments impossible. The only solution is to tear the mount down and finish the parts to eliminate the interference. Google astronomyboy for the how to. I have to warn you that I had to heat the cylinder and axle in the oven at 250 for 30 minutes before they would separate. don't use the wife's good oven mits!! When I finish these parts I use Soft Scrub (w/o bleach) as a grinding compound. It's basically bicarb in a jell. HTH, Geo.
Focus knob turns but nothing moves
The Celestron manual for this scope has nothing to say, but on the underside of the focuser assembly, between the 2 focus knobs, you may see 2 screws. They might be thumbscrews or some other screwhead type. One is the adjustment for the focuser internal clearance, or looseness, and the other is a focus travel lock.If present, try backing both off 1/2 turn from tightness, and then experiment to see which is which. The focus lock will have no effect until tight, when the focuser will cease moving, as is now. The other screw will gradually remove looseness and rattle from the focuser until it just moves smoothly, with no back and forth loose feeling at the knob.If neither of these screws is visible you will have to take it to a binocular and telescope shop, where they should not charge much.
