XP sees and names added slave HD but won't show files
What kind of Windows do you have on the 4300 most likely the reason is file systems. The XP has NTFS file system and is not readable under Windows 98 SE if that is what you have on your 4300 computer. An option that you have is to update the 4300 to an XP to read the data on the drive.

Barracuda hard drive issue
ok..just check all the cable and then attach the new hard disk..after that if u r getting d same probs thenjust check his hard disk in another system and if its OK then its means that BIOS is not supporting or either the fault is on your power supply.

My hard disk goes hang
I have a similar problem with an 80 gb drive in a Compaq. I've isolated it to the cable or the connector on either the motherboard or the drive. Try unplugging the cable at each end, then plugging it back in. Reboot. If it finds it and works normally, you have 1) a bad hard drive cable 2) a bad hard drive controller socket on the MB (bad MB :-( ) or 3) an intermittent connector on the hard drive. 1 is easy. 2 and 3 are problems. Try a different drive and see if it boots reliably every time - if so, suspect the drive. If its the MB, probably time to UPGRADE.

SEAGATE IDE 80 GIG BARRICUDA DONT HAVE CYLINDERHEADS SECTOR INFO
I use gparted tool to find it. Once you boot from the CD (with the .iso of gparted on it), you can access the tool to find the cylinder by right-clicking on the desk and select ???? sorry, I'm not sure about the name of the tool. So go to gparted.com and download the program. If you need more help, let me know.

SATA HDD make SLAVE
IDE Cable with 3 connectors (you have 1 or need to buy 1) :
- blue: conn to motherboard
- black: conn to master HD
- grey: conn to slave HD
Cable (select:) cable will auto detect with most modern HD's from same type (SATA it was i think) and you need to go to you're BIOS, set up cable select for the HD's. Maybe best to set up master first, not both at same time. If you have a SATA and ATA set up the master first, then other. So if SATA is slafe but it in grey connector, otherwise black. For an ATA you might need a converter cable for the power, most motherboards don't have 1.

Barracuda hard disk 80gb
More than likely, since you say you did a DOS install of the OS, you did not set the FDISK parameters to set your primary drive. Insert the DOS CD you used to format the system. Boot to a DOS prompt and run the FDISK command. It should have an option, I believe it is number 2 or 3 to "Set primary drive". Select your hard disk 0 as this drive and you should be fine at rhat point.

It doesnt turn on
Segate drives are prone to blow the diode between 12V and ground. When this shorts they draw masses of power (I have one which was smoking & drawing about 250W) and then the PSU won't start because of the short.
Put a meter over the small square diode marked something like BUX C??? (? are three numbers but they differ between drives) it should be about 10KO if it's more like 1 ohm then you have a short.
Clip it out & the drive will run, but it's a "penny in the fusebox" method - use it to recover your data only.
Clip it out & replace it with something like an SMD 1N4004 & you'll be back in business.

Serial number missing
The volume serial number is automatically generated when you format the drive. By using the Seagate utility to zero fill the drive, you have made it blank and destroyed all data, including the partition table and filesystem. Re-partition and re-format the drive.

HD SIZE
Well it is possible that you partationed the hard drive
if you dont see a c drive and a drive in your system it means the rest of the hard drive isnt in use..
if you see it and ou only have 1 hard drive then it is in use..
IT SHOULD SHOW UP AS
LOCAL DISC C
and
LOCAL Disc D
what you need to do is format your computer, remove all partations and just instally directly on yout hard drive without partitioning it :)
regards and best of luck for the new year
