My automatic threader won't thread.

Hi

Make sure the needle is installed correctly (facing the correct direction and all the way up into the clamp on the shaft).Check the manual for needle insertion. The needle has to be in its highest position when using the auto threader. When using an auto threader and the threading wire mis-hits the needle, you can bend or break the wire. A bent threading wire can be realigned, but a broken wire will require a replacement of the threader.

In Brother SE-270D there are several reasons that could cause the auto threader not to work.

  • The needle was not raised. Press the needle position button. The thread cassette indicator will light up in green.
  • The needle is not installed correctly. Install the needle making sure the flat side is facing the back.
  • The thread cartridge is not threaded correctly. Make sure the thread cartridge is threaded according to the diagram.

I have a Brother SE-270D

The bobbin case may not be correctly installed and iscausing the misalignment and breakage.

Look through the maintenance section for cleaning and lubricating. This willalso provide info and a picture for setting the bobbin case back into theshuttle.

No manual? Singer and Brother have free downloads at their Internet sites.Other brands are iffy as to being able to download without paying.

If you do not have (or cannot obtain) a manual, raise the needle to its highestposition and this will align the shuttle race for the bobbin case. There shouldbe a groove in the side of the race for the arm/wing on the bobbin case to fitinto.

If cleaning the area below the needle plate and bobbin area along with correctinsertion of the bobbin into the bobbin case and the bobbin case into theshuttle do not solve the problem, then you have a bigger issue - the timing andneeds to be adjusted (not for a novice) and requires a trip to the shop forserviced. If that doesn't work, change your needle plate.
If you've been using a straight stitch needle plate (a plate with a small hole, often used for sewing fine, delicate fabrics), switch to a needle plate with awider hole.

Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

I have a Brother SE-270

Welcome to FixYa.

Take a look at the picture below. If that is what you mean, then you really need to take it in for repair. The metal arm is snapped in one of the plastic hinges/lever inside the thread cassette. Attempting to put it back without exposing the hinges/lever would be a risk in further damaging the machine.

Make sure that any wiring that is not soddered is free of dust, and is not filled with dust. (harnesses) some harnesses are "greased" to help protected them, however, as I'm sure you are aware, grease is a "dust" magnet. Over time, the grease, from use and temperature differences, especially heat dries out, and beacomes cracked - it often breaks, and then starts the corrossion process - make sure that there is none of this happening. Check all connections inside the unit (if not already) that they are properly inserted, free of old grease, and have been properly lubricated (if applicable for this unit). As far as the micro chip - check on the back side of the motherboard (if not already checked); and it will most likely be very small, and will have the small white (yellow) switch.

I am not too familiar with this particular model, but similar, and hope this information proves useful. My apologize if it is not.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

The machine is stuck on

Hi,
Try unplugging the machine from the power outlet and leave it off for about 2-3 minutes. This will reboot the machine and it should function normally afterwards. If this doesnt work, you may want to contact Brother to get some tech support. Their number is 877-276-8437 and they're open M-F, 9:00am to 5:45pm Eastern Time.
I hope this helps. :-)

My needle keep hitting something

If the bobbin has been inserted correctly and the needle keeps hitting something, check the bobbin and bobbin holder for damage (bent or missing parts) If there is no damage to either of these then the timing of the machine may need to be adjusted. This is usually best left to someone with sewing machine repair experience.

Try a new needle. Otherwise the timing might be off. Have a Brother dealer check it out.

Take it in for service, hopefully it is still under warranty, I have sneaking suspician that your motor is causing the problem. I had a machine that did that and it turned out to be the motor.

It feels tight when you manually put the needle

Usually when I get this on my sewing machine I need to oil the cams and bearings. The lubrication points are described in my owner's manual; I don't know if that is the case for your model. Each point generally gets only one or two drops of sewing machine oil; too much makes a big mess.

Picking up the bobbin thread has to be done by manually. Turn off the machine, open the bobbin door, lift the presser foot, hold the end of the upper thread and slowly turn the side wheel till the needle enters the bobbin race and on the way up it will catch the bobbin thread. Pull the upper thread till you lift the bobbin thread too. Put both threads to the back of the machine, close the bobbin door and you should be able to sew.

Check the top shaft bearings. Have similar problem on another computerized model. Top right bearing was completely stuck. Using Liquid Wrench to unfreeze it. Afterwards use sintered bearing oil like Tri-Flow to lubricate bearing.

Jams up when attempting to sew, making loud noise.

Thread jams underneath usually are caused by top thread tension issues. Things to check:
top tension discs are clean and no thread traces caught in there, tension is set to medium number usually 4 or 5 and that the top thread is running freely from the thread spool, correctly thread through the tension discs, and down to the needle. Lower the pressure foot and pull the thread from just above the needle; it should feel firm resistance if under tension correctly.

As you've had a good jam up, good idea to now remove the bobbin, needle plate and bobbin holder (refer to your manual if you have never done this before) and clean out the hook area well, look for any fine thread remants and brush out any lint etc. Oil the rotary hook area as per your manual. Now reassemble, and rethread everything again checking that the bobbin thread is clicked into the tension spring and that the top thread is through the tension discs correctly.

Also, pop in a new needle, flat shank to the back, then try again.

Good luck with your machine.

Bobbin is clumping up

You haven't given a lot of details so I'll just assume this is a bobbin issue initially.

Take out the bobbin and rewind a fresh bobbin of thread paying attention to the following.

You want to keep a bit of tension on the thread spool as the thread winds off it - good way is by placing the round handle of a pair of sewing scissors onto the top of the spool. If you let it just bounce around it will affect the bobbin winding neatly and the thread won't then run off the bobbin smoothly as you sew.

Also visually watch the bobbin as it fills, and give the thread a nudge with your finger tip to ensure it fills top and bottom, not just in the middle.

Think of how you wind up the garden hose reel, if you let it all go in the middle, it jams up before the whole hose is wound onto the reel. But if you wind it carefully and move the hose around winding it evenly across the whole reel, it stays neat and doesn't all jam up. Same principle for bobbins; don't just run the thread through the little tension disc and press the pedal hard until it stops.

Also quality of the thread is important; cotton wrapped polyester is nice to sew with and has a bit of spring, strength and good sheen; not sure where you are. But the brands I look for are Sylko Supreme, Guttermann and Mettler threads; there are other good brands too. Don't use those cheap bags of 5 white or black thread in the bargain bin. Some threads you can actually see particles of dye coming off the thread around the spool holder as you sew. Darker colours do this more.

And keep your threads stored neatly in air tight containers away from light, insects or damp; textiles fade and break down under UV rays eventually.

Now rethread your machine and ensure that the bobbin has gone into the bobbin holder winding in the correct direction for your machine, and that the thread has clicked into the tension spring.

Hope this helps, a good source of general sewing machine info is www.sewing.about.com.

Check the bobbin tension and that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder.
