Brother MF 5440CN USB Printer won't print. Says

While there may be ink in the cartidges, your printer is getting a signal from the cartidge that it's near empty. There is no real workaround for this; you just have to replace the cartridge(s). If you use a LOT of ink, you might consider installing a CIS (continuous ink system) now made for most printers. You will save a lot of money over time.

What you describe is typical.

My Brother MFC5440CN when copying

The first thing I would try is to fix the corona wire. Here is a link to Brother's website outlining the process (clean corona wire).
What you need to do is pull out the drum and look for a blue tab on the top of the cartridge. Slide that tab back and forth along the wire and see if that clears things up.
I have had some luck cleaning the drum when I get black streaks but I have also hear this can be dangerous and make the problem worse.

I had never had an issue with this MFC 5440 CN

Ivan, see if there are some paper clips or other similar objects stuck somewhere around the paper rollers. There are micro-switches around the rollers, you may want to take a brush and clean up any dust buildup that may be causing these micro-switches to trick the printer into thinking that there's a paper jam of some kind

PRINTER UNABLE TO CLEAN

You can download the manual as a PDF here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/doc/manual_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc5440cn_all
Select language and search.

Usually the unable to clean message means that either the printer has a mechanical problem or some foreign object is inside the unit. Open the scanner cover and check for any foreign objects.

Then transfer any faxes in memory off the unit to a different fax machine or computer. Press Menu/Set 9, 0, 1 to check for faxes. If there are none, unplug the printer from the power source and leave it unplugged for several minutes. Then reconnect the power cord and see if the message repeats. (If you need to transfer faxes see section 11-4 (page 132) of the manual, see the above link. Unplugging the unit will lose the faxes in memory.)

I hope this helps. If the message repeats, the unit probably needs service.

MFC5440CN -

try this may do it.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.
