Brother HL-5240 Laser Printer - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Loud clicking noise
This is one of the known issues with the HL-5240. This will require a replacement paper tray. Definately the problem if it is more of a clack than a click.
Red light with orange on toner
If you've had the machine one year and not replaced the toner cartridge, you will get a prompt to replace it (it's a sales thing for Brother). And you will continue to get that prompt until you do; or until you reset the lever on the cartridge. Problem is that the 'original' cartridge doesn't have that lever with gear assembly, so you have to buy it from someone else ($10).I also tape over the little windows on the toner cartridge so I never get a low toner alert. I want to use up all the toner I can before adding more. But the first thing to do with any toner alert is to remove the cartridge and shake it back and forth (left and right).Other than that, we would need more info on what your lights are indicating the problem is.Good luck.
Paper fails to exit tray and, when it does, it jams at the drum
You can try to get a maintenance kit for it. That would replace the fuser, the pickup rollers and the transfer roller. Try Feedroller.com for reasonable prices and manuals. Then again, if this printer is old, it may be more cost effective to just replace it with an HP or Lexmark.
How do I change the drum in my HL-5240
First check whether it is possible to buy a new drum for your model, if
possible buy a new drum then remove the toner from your printer,
separate the drum unit from the toner, if you check thoroughly the left
and right sides of the drum unit how the drum has been fixed in to it
you will be able to find the way remove drum from the unit, then replace
the new drum and fix it. Don not tough the edge wiper blade, rotate the
drum and check whether it rotating smoothly in both direction.
Yesterday I was printing 4 pages from my office to
There is a sensor that goes up when printing and should go back to its normal position after ejecting the printed page. Sometimes it get stuck, you can manually reposition that sensor. It looks like a small plastic lever and located where the paper is going out.

Sounds like the corona ('charge') wire probably needs cleaned.
open the printer and remove the toner catridges.
Some cartridges have the corona wire intergrate into the catridge, in which case you will usually find a slider to slide from side to site to clean the wire.
Otherwise look in the inside of the printer, directly below where the cartidge would be for a wire. The printer should have a slider or cleaning tool for the wire, but if not use a lint free cloth to gently clean the wire.
replace catridge and re-try. If problem persists then let me know and I can advise further
good luck
