Power cable description

Hello,The power supply is 12v. There are two different versions of that model monitor and the plug connector for the power is different. One version has 4 pins on the power connector on the other has just a center pin and barrel. You need to check the connection on the back of your monitor before you order that adapter to be sure and get the correct one that you need. You can get both type here:http://www.ccl-la.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=25

My Compaq 172 monitor won't

Failing Power capacitors. The capacitors hold the charge necessary to build up the voltage that lights the screen. When they leak or fail to hold the charge, the screen will cut out. It could also be a fault in the switch circuitry. Really needs looking at by a qualified technician.

I need the pin-out for

There are two pairs on the connector: one pair for 12vd, one pair for Ground return.
I did not work on one of this model for a couple of years, but I use Ohm meter to find out by check for 0 Ohm between the Monitor metal chassis which is ground, tow of the four pins should read 0 Ohm, that will be the Negative, the other 2 will be +12vdc (it should read 0 Ohm between these two 12vdc pins).

Please post back what you find.
Please leave rating if it helps.

In regards to your issue with your monitor if you have changed out the VGA cord and tried the monitor on another computer but still have the problem this is a sign of a short in the monitor its self.

Note with modern electronics they have contact switches. What this means is means is you close the same circuit to turn a item on or off. The problem with these switches is that if there is a short that is not properly going to ground this can cause a charge to build up on the mainboard to a point where is starts turn on or off things on its own. If not fix this can damage the device more.

So you can try to take the monitor to a electronic repair shop but in most cases if maybe cheaper to replace the monitor. Another thing you can try is making sure that monitor is plugged in to a properly grounded plug. Less than 50% of house that were built over 10 years ago have properly grounded plugs. If you are not sure you can get a tester at your local hardware store. It looks like a 3 pronge plug with lights and it will let you know if the plug is grounded. Once you get the monitor plugged into a ground plug this may fix the problem for the time being.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

Picture wont show. It shows for a second then

Looks like a component failure in the monitor, the backlight or inverter box has problems.

Its a common fault.

Power button doesn't work

Not very likely to be the switch itself, the switch is a tactile momentary switch, more likely to have failed power supply due to bad caps just like the rest of failed monitors here, check to see if your adapter is putting out 12vdc, then we need to find out if it is getting 12vdc all the way to the main board and the inverter board:

Compaq 1720 monitor: the green

You need to find out if the power supply is still putting out 12vdc, you may have to test it with a load (use 12v car bulb such as the brake lamp). It is getting hot can be due to bad power supply or too much load because of short circuits in the monitor. Please post back what you find about the power supply first.

Monitor HP 1720 Part n.325113-001

Your actually thinking about it the wrong way.
Replacing the screen in LCD's is more expensive then replacing the monitor. Stupid I know, but that is how they ensure you have to keep upgrading. Same thing applies to a laptop motherboard for the same reason.

You do still have one small light at the end of the tunnel though.
Check around on eBay or similar and you maybe able to find a complete monitor with a dead power board that you can salvage the screen from. Do a search for words like Faulty, broiken, not working in the computer section.

Hope that helps. =)

(so is distraction to what it is)the real name of the Laptop is and was Presario CQ61 laptop CQ61 the PC has bottom sticker that shows the real names of PCs.CQ61-219TU is real name of on CQ61, there area many different sub codes, and they are not all the same.CQ61-306AX this had CCFL (cold cathode florecent lamps) that love to fail 3 waysdead, blinks ,dime or yellow = white.was made until 2009 and evolved, to LED backlamps.-410 is CCFLI will answer for CCFL as those just love to fail, but the the test is so easynow the answer for ANY laptop this old. 2007 and older. black screen all the time, and BIOS screens dead, answers only me. here. remove the main battery (large) it simply snaps off the bottom.the power pack is next we run the PC on your power pack AC to DC it must make the screen glow with something, do not use the wrong pack as in mixed up with others.now the lap top seems on, even the fan blows, LED glowpoint a flash lamp at the screen ,dark' room , and of you see any kind of LCD data on the screenthe CCFL lamp below #1 is bad.this is phase 1 testing, as other things can fail too. The keyword below is Mercurythis tells me it is those pesky CCFL glow tubes. 2007 is the year some PC went to LED back lamps. yes I was correct the service manual I did find proves they made both lamp types ccfl-hp07-psnmcz4s4yabbrmds04n13cd-d-0.jpg
