Inherited Compaq FS740 but after hooking up

Check the pins on the cables. Single color presentation but clear picture indicates the pin for a particular color is borken on teh cable. Remember Red Green and Blue are mixed to make other colors. If you have predominantly one color then its due to cable not haveing all pins inserted properly or damaged.

My monitor compaq FS740 is out of focus

Focus adjustment on a CRT monitor is a simple thing to do, although you need to open the case and there are HIGH VOLTAGES inside.

The adjustment is actually on the high voltage (flyback) transformer. There are two screwdriver adjustments, the one you want is labelled Focus (of course). Do NOT adjust the other one, you may destroy your monitor and injure yourself.

This MUST be done with a plastic adjusting screwdriver, NOT with a metal one. This transformer produces in the range of 25,000 volts, from the high tension lead on the top which plugs into the back of the picture tube. This lead still has very high voltage present, days after turning off the monitor.

If you don't feel competent to do this, that's fine, take it to a technician who is comfortable with it.

You have been WARNED of the dangers.

It's also possible that the lack of focus is a symptom of something more drastic being wrong, in which case you would probably think about buying an LCD screen.

WhenI turn my monitor on, a screen appears saying

Do you have multiple Video cards installed in your computer?

Check the monitor on another computer to verify the Monitor works and so does the cable.

If Monitor works, cable works, and you have 1 video output from your computer, then your Video card is probably no good.

I have a compaq fs740

Hello Paul and thank you for using Fixya's services.

CRT monitors are allot like television sets. The insides include a cathode tube and a filament. Here are more details on the insides:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-crt-monitor.htm

Being a computer tech, I was warned not to open up the CRT monitor because they have radiation, have a non-isolated line power supply and the are high voltage. This advice, I have respected as I didn't need any radiation ; )

The reason for your monitor issues is the tube. It is going out and can be replaced but the cost may outweigh the replacement. I belivee a replacement is around $69.00 depending on the size.

I hope I have been of some help and please let me know if you have any questions.

Computer monitor turns on but no image appears.

1. When you boot the computer keep pressed 'F' & 'J'. the display should appear if there is no hard to your hardwares.
2. If you still not get the images on monitor try to unplug and plug back in the monitor's data cord.
3. If you still do not get success then you must need to open the computer tower and see if the RAM is not loose from the slot and processor is not loose from its slot.

Once these settings are perfect nothing can stop you getting from the proper display until and unless you monitor is damaged.

Best of luck!

The monitor leaves a message no input signal, then " going to sle

That signal means the monitor is not getting any signal from the computer. It probably means your video card or connection is bad. You can buy a pretty cheap ($35-$100) video card from a local store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack) or online. Since it is a newer computer you can probably buy the graphics card with the PCIe card. If you want to do it yourself you will need to open up the computer (the side) and check for the correct connection. Here is a picture to help identify the ports. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0c/PCI_und_PCIe_Slots.jpg

find the one that looks like yours and get that one. You will be able to slide off the back cover and install it. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, any local computer shop or guy should be able to help. Good Luck!

Monitor is putting out a really annoying high tone

Sounds like you have a capacitor going bad. All monitors make a noise, whether the human ear can usually hear it or not. If it has gotten rather loud, I'm afraid your monitor is on its last leg. White is a hard color for a monitor, because the electron gun inside has to fire on all pixels, and of course black is easiest because it is just blank. Some people I've talked to have had temporary relief or prolonged the life of their monitor by keeping it on lower resolution in order to make its job a bit easier. Besides that, there isn't too much you can do.

Compaq monitor

OK your monitor is failing in the Horizontal circuitry.... OR the PSU is failing to supply the correct Voltages. Either way it is probably going to fail completely soon. With monitors so cheap now, here in NZ they are about NZ$20.00 - $50.00, repair isn't adviseable to do so, it would make more sense to put the Repair monies into a NEW screen... maybe time for an LCD?

The video camera

Is it built into the monitor? If so, then there should be a USB port on the back/bottom of it or something of the sort. Are you telling me that you don't know how to connect it physically to the internet, or that you don't know how to connect it software-wise?

Compaq Monitor

OK All these Compaq's have a Power Supply problem, or a Horizontal Voltage problem.. meaning they are on the way out. The SMPSU's in these units often fail along with the Horizontal Drive Circuitry. I think it is time for a new one? Repair of such a unint would barely be "Ecconomical" IMHO.
