My sound system stopped working

what PC, non stated , only that old monitor that monitor is 16 years old today, wow , 99% are dead now long ago, dead when the CCFL lamps burned out long ago you be lucky it works at all, a fact. no the USB port is not sound, but they sell USB speakers and head phones that have its own sound system (CHIP_) total that replaces the sound in your unstated PC, (but is topic 2 not #1) lets do sound blind, I cant see your pC can I, no photos or names or models or what cables are attached can I, now. so sound 101: day: (forget USB for now, ok?) 1: my guess is desktop of some kind, (i use a monitor on a laptop) 2: remove all usb devices now, cept keyboard and mouse. 3: now see rear of PC, see those 3 or more 3.5mm phone jacks.? sure, see that green round phone jack, that is LINE out. 1.5mm diameter it is, (no set of pins , no USB this) if you connect ear buds or a real phone jack head phones this works now, (does it , bugs are 1 buck at the dollar store) eg: click control panel of your unstated windows, click sound click speakers, mine has many speakers to chose, 7.1, but if old PC it has one speaker click that,. (mine is fancy express sound card, with surround sound, so can yours if you buy the card) then click tab called, sounds , see asterisk. and test button this is the best way to test sound first. only this. This is built in to all windows made. all. and always works if the sound driver is present. if the test button fails to work at all. is gray out that is windows way of telling you the sound driver is borked up, missing or corrupted, one of my PC run linux, so.... that be different... lets say you get this far, ok? 4: lets say a real head phone works on the 1green jack. it must. forget USB for now, that is advanced stuff that MS does not support but can function good with hard work later. 5: now that monitor or any external speakers sold are all ampified speaker,, no they are NOT just speaker with only a voice coil inside. not at all. the monitor needs that 3.5mm cable attached, the amp in the monitor must be accessed, just like real exteral speakers that same do. on the monitor, here I will read your manual to you now. so can you why not do that first?????? 6:push the menu button on the monitor to get to sound volume/ the FP5012 as a 2watt amp inside that can fail or someone reset the monitor and the reset puts volume to 0 zero. the jack is named on mon. 1 x audio - input - mini-phone stereo 3.5 mm - 1 why not just by new external speaker kit (amplified for PC)? spend like $10? i found your manual, want it? push center button now. push menu choice (OSD) 5 , for sound volume bingo? page 15, in dah manual. omg, its got its own button on front of mon. its not in the OSD on this monitor as is most. http://www.manualsdir.com/manuals/67592/compaq-5017.html end stock sound systems. USB is a totally different and more complex topic, as all USB devices can be, MS even has a warning on the use of these usb sound devices, ask and can send it to you in short MS says zero support on them ask your vender for that. do not run onboard sound with USB sound or they will fight each other, until you learn how to control that, ask. we do it all the time here. ok here is the V button set, below. if this fails and buds work, the monitor is BAD. if the buds fail the PC is messed up, (USB not used) cost of testing $1 (buds) v-y5lcaykkf42lwqqbpm0ein5s-3-0.jpg buds means ear buds, sold in just about all stores now. for nada, get some keep them handy of cheap testing.

(I have inside info on that) that means what, this moment forward devices you add or install fresh XP things will FAIL. !!! what is XP, ? the Operating system by Microsoft? MS-XP? OS? XP is a problem but can run, off internet safely. no PC stated at all ,just a monitor if the sound is bad, I can see what you have there,at all the speaker in the monitor only need the small cable to do that a 3.5mm phone mini connectors is it. plugged in to your ustated PC , jack marked speakes next YOUR XP OS must have the correct sound card (chip) driver loaded or sound will be dead, in all cases. why not tell pc name and model first then say sounds deAD. then show the device manager page, on sound. XP key strokes are convoluted here. click start, then control panel. click system click hardware. click device manger, (wthew) pant pant... xp sux lucky you I have and old XP laptop (relic) that works like new. but the c-media sound chip fails. (only eMachines his it) when I fresh load XP this chip fails (and others) that is the no and future of XP, what we so is hand load it from the makers support site, but you never once told what PC you have. why? i can teach you how easy. on mine i down load the intel sound chip driver or go to emachine side do same or if HP machine (is it) we get it from there if pc is under 10 years old. if not oops. we must go to intel. or what your MFG codes and DEV codes is , ask me. i can decode them all. ask this is my xp failing on sound the XP cant even tell it is sound just other devices, and is in yellow, Red or unknown words all mean the driver is missing mine below is intel sound. mfg 8086 = intel dev 24d5 is intel's sound chip... so there are 2 ways to fix a fail like below. tell me what PC you have maker and model number full or tell me your codes below. and ill get you your driver. sound2-wcj1avqu0msqxnqr1cdquwfl-1-0.png

How do i get the OSD lock to stop flashing on my

mcadams_alic, Mostlikely a problem inside unit. After visiting this web site: http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2005/05/02/hp-pavilion-f1703-flat-panel-display-blackout-solution/ you may then understand why your unit is acting "strange"!!! Your lcd monitor isn't any different than any other brand in it's basic design and operation. When very strange stuff starts appearing on the screen of any CCFLback-lit lcd monitor the first place all lcd technicians would look will be the monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply!!!! hope this helps. 12fixlouie

A menu keeps flashing on my monitor so fast I can

mrsrobins849, if monitor manufacturing date (on rear of unit) is anywhere close to 2003-2004 then trade unit for new wide screen only if problem of flashing "menu" goes away when you connect a borrowed substitute monitor to your pc. Will your monitor "act" same when connected to "known-good" "fully-booted" pc that will display the WIN-desktop?? Most problems with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" "back-lit" lcd monitors can be attributed to their internal or external "switch-mode-power-supply" DC voltages degrading over time with use.

Just says going to sleep

I will assume that you have already try this monitor with other PC nad also try new VGA cable but still getting the same result. Then the problem will be inside the monitor which you will have to open it up and inspect the inside for failed components. Most common failure in the monitors are capacitors in the power supply section, see some pictures here as a guide to what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Someone gave me this monitor but without a manual.

One can usually identify the purpose of front panel buttons just by trying to use them. However, you may need to download a driver specific to this piece of hardware in order to make it fully functional. Here's a link.

http://www.nodevice.com/driver/5017/get31112.html

As for the speakers not working, there are several possible explanations for this. For example, installing the driver may bring them online. More likely though you need to make sure there's an audio cable connected to the back of the monitor and plugged into the appropriate audio port on the back of your computer. Good luck.

Won't turn on... keeps

Try another monitor on the computer, if it works properly then you know that the original monitor is the issue.

If the 2nd monitor gives you the same issue then you know its a problem with the computer. At that point, unseat and reseat the memory. Try another power supply. If the monitor still shows sleep mode then the motherboard in the computer is bad.

My screen flickers on and off

I'm not sure if this is exactly the same issue or not. My monitor would not turn on. I'd get the green power led for half a second or so, then it would go off. No power. This is how I fixed it.

It was good.
I looked at the capacitors and noticed all five of the 470 uf, 16V, 105 C and both of the 1000 uf, 16 V, 105 C units were domed on the top. This is an indication of “Capacitor Plague.” “Capacitor Plague” is caused by the dielectric in the capacitor breaking down under excessive strain (voltage ripple/spiking and heat). This releases hydrogen from the dielectric which caused the capacitor to degrade. This eventually results in failure. I replaced all of the capacitors with 25 V, 105 C (the next higher voltage rating with the same temperature rating) caps.
I also replaced the 7.5 V Zener Diode connected to pin 6 of the PWM. This is ZD904 on my monitor’s power supply PCB but may be different on yours. The tech data is very bad and the Tech manual part numbering doesn’t match the numbers on the PCB. Since this is a surface mount diode, and since I couldn’t find one like it at my local supplier, I used a 5 watt (massively over sized for the application) 7.5 V unit and it worked. It does require some care in the soldering of it in place. I did this because I read about it in another post. I just took the shot and it worked.
In any event, having replaced the capacitors and that Zener Diode, the monitor is functioning again.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Compaq FP 5315 Monitor Disassembly

This is how I did it.

1- Remove the four screws in the back of the monitor. Two are in the bottom corners and two more near the bottom center ( these hold the stand in place).
2- Remove the stand.
3-The case back is held on by the four screws and a number of plastic pressure clips. After removing the screws: using a fairly wide flat bladed screw driver; insert the blade in either of the two slots on the bottom edge of the case and twist with medium force. This begins the seperation of the back from the rest of the monitor. As the crack widens, begin moving the blade of the screw driver along the widening crack (around the case edge) and twisting gently. This releases each pressure clip in turn. Separate the case back from the rest of the monitor.

I did this this way with my monitor. It works.
Good luck.

My compaq 610 windows logo is stuck during booting and even if I want to format it. Any help?

Windows 7 should be the OS. If you go to safe mode, it should complete booting and then you can list the errors but I suspect there is a driver error. Maybe the wrong version in there.
