pull the knob off note the position of the brass gas valve turn the knob 90 degrees see if the position of the brass piece changed the same as knob if not inspect the knob see if its cracked also look on the shaft see if there is a small d shaped metal piece on it if there is it goes up inside the knob let me know what you find will advise from there

When the oven lighting mechanism lights the gas the flames heat a temperature sensor that, once hot, increases the pressure in the sensor's copper pipe and opens a safety valve to allow gas to continue to flow (It's made like this so, if your flame gets blown out, the sensor cools and cuts off the gas supply, making it safe from gas leaks). These sensors occasionally fail, and very sensibly "Fail safe" - No pressure in the sensor pipe, the valve won't open and there is no gas to the burner. If you take a look inside the oven at the back where the burner is, you will see the sensor, usually the bit that is in the flame is cylindrical, about an inch long made of metal about 3 or 4 mm thick, tapering at the end. It will be held in place by a nut that fits on a thread at the base of the sensor. Running from the sensor is a copper pipe that runs to the cutoff valve. Unbolt the sensor and withdraw it from the hole it is mounted in, trace the copper pipe back to the valve (where it is usually screwed into the valve with a 10mm connector that looks like a car brake pipe connector. Unbolt from the valve. These sensors are widely used on most gas appliances (Boilers, gas fires, cooker hob burners and patio heaters all use the same kind of sensor). You should be able to get a replacement from any gas appliance service agent. If you go into a shop, take it with you. The ignitor is not working right and is going bad....
have the repair man replace the ignitor, or DIY....

oven does not stay on number i set .hotpoint apt size elec.about 8 yrs old. can it be addjusted?

The spark should light the pilot automatically. If you open the broiler door and look up at the left rear side of the burner, you should see the pilot assembly and the spark igniter. Try lighting the pilot by hand with a match, right where the spark is. If it lights, the oven should come on. If it doesn't light, there may be a blockage in the pilot assembly, like a spider web or something. If the pilot seems too small, it may set for LP and you are on Natural gas. The adjustment for that is behind the oven knob, a screw. Good luck.

hi not sure but if your oven is activated like the gas hobs? ie electronic spark? not actual flame pilot thentry this ? turn gas dial to start? or the rq'd temp setting? then push/press the dial inwards whilst you press the ignitor button for hob ? rather like the operation start up of mobile valor gas heaters??

the cap tube from the thermostat goes in the oven from back then 2 clips on the side hold it in place....I don't see a need to shut gas off but you(by law) should have a turn off valve...it's just a good thing to have...you must have a valve to the house don't pay your bill they will find it fast..thumbs up

CHECK OVEN IGNITOR, IF IT IS GAS.

sounds like you have a standing pilot system.if so and you have turned up the adjustment screw and no better .you will have to replace the pilot tube assemblie

thats very easy first unplug the stove lift the top it should stay up with the arms extended,pull the arms out of the slot and remove oven top , gently pull knobs off , remove all hidden screws behind knobs, remove the front panel held in place by 2-3 screws on top and under panel, remove 2 screws holding existing thermostat unplug 2 wire thermost follow capillary to sensing bulb which is inside the oven unless it broke off it should be there, im asuming thats why you are replacing it ,remove sensing bulb from 2 brackets holding it in place make sure its perfectly straight because it has to pass through a small hole, installaton is the opposite of removal good luck.

Question edited for clarity and toss in a load of CAPS! It is a gas appliance and must only be worked on by a gas certified technician. The same thing happened to my Hotpoint cooker and they replaced it. It happened to the replacement product also. Now they don't want to speak to me. DO NOT BUY HOTPOINT/ whirlpool products. They are very unprofessional . Please don't buy their products. You will regret it

I would suspect a damaged thermostat control.
