Camera won't accept tape...
have the same problem and it is fixed! I laughed when I first read this but it does work! Take off your battery from the back of the camera, turn it over and give it a nice firm wack. Put battery back in and it WILL get rid of your error and work. I've tried the hair dryer before and it has worked but this time for me it did not.. It truly works... Hope your as happy as I was when it worked....
Good luck..

Tape mechanism problems can be quite complicated. This will require disassembling the camera to repair the tape mechanism and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.
My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Hi,
By
using a video camera, you can capture life's important events in all
its movement, color and sound. Sony's entry into this recording arena is
with the Handycam series, which started with tape storage before
progressing to hard disk and Mini DV formats. One hallmark of this
device is the ability to quickly transfer recordings from camera to PC
using the PC operating system and without the need of an external capture program.
Instructions
- Turn off the camcorder before connecting it to the PC using the included USB.
- Turn on the camcorder and open the flip-out screen. The USB Select screen appears. Tap Computer on the screen.
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your PC desktop. The My
Computer window opens to reveal the camcorder as a new storage device.
If the camcorder is not appearing as an icon, try turning it on and off
and selecting Computer on the flip-out screen once more.
- Double-click the Camcorder icon to open it. A list of stored
videos appears. Click to select the video that you want to transfer.
- Press the Ctrl and C keys to copy the video.
- Use My Computer on your PC to browse to the folder in which
you want to store the copy. (If needed, create a new folder.)
Double-click the folder to open it.
- Press the Ctrl and V keys to paste the copied video into the
folder. If needed, right-click the video and choose Rename to give the
video a more meaningful name.

Usually Sony Camcorders are designed to turn off after 5 minutes of non recording. If you want to disable without recording like when you try to use the Camcorder as webcam, please remove the tape from the Camcorder. If the tape/cassette is not inserted in the Camcorder, it will not go to standby mode. Thanks for understanding.. If you need any assistance, please ask me

The tape has to load correctly, and all the guide and load arms have to initialize. Usually, the problem is one of two things: a dirty tape mech assembly, or not greased, and the solution is to have it cleaned and serviced. A drive belt can get oxidized and slip or break, and that will shut it down.
First thing to do is get it cleaned, then see if it needs servicing. I don't recommend cleaning the camcorder, since the heads can be easily damaged in the process, and needs to be done correctly with the right materials (chamois leather tipped cleaners).
Good luck, and hope this helps.

How transfear data ( tap record )from camera to computer
You need a "firewire" card in your desktop or laptop. The iWire cable then connects to that and to the camera. If you are using XP on your pc, you most likely have MS Movie Maker which should work fine for both transfer and editing your movie on your pc.
