JVC 290 camcorder chews up tapes

This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My uncle recently gave me

Sounds like a software conflict, or possibly a conflict with the CD and Windows, not sure. However, you can still get your videos into the computer. Finalize the mini-dvd, and then you can put it into your computer's dvd drive, and copy it over to a folder on the computer. As for the stills that are taken on a SD card, you can insert the card into a card reader and get them to the computer that way. It sounds like you may have a bad usb cord, and you should be able to find one at a used computer repair shop, or Best Buy.
Try to find the folder that the CD installed to, and you may be able to manually open the program, getting it to work.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

Black Horizontal Lines on Screen

mostly this is the result of defective or dirty video head. simply clean the video head by using head cleaning cassette. If it solves the problem, well, but if the problem remains contact the vendor.

Unit in safeguard mode

You mix te info with Write protected tapes.
Safe guard mode is caused by the motor that takes the tape out of it's case, through the mechanics and past the video head.
If for some reason the electronics detect that it's been done by too much force, the safe guard issue promts.

Have a jvc camcorder turn on and it says safe mode remove battery

Forget the battery, the mini dv carrage assy can get out of sync and initiate the safe mode, if you noticed a problem loading the tape or have heard a gear skip sound thats the problem. The best you can do with those camcorders is keep the tape in the camcorder!!!!! That will prevent the problem and insure many good years of recording.

Sorry,

Tim.

Could be the battery needs replacement. Zoom not working? I am afraid it needs replacement for zoom unit is vulnerable to moisture by the user's hand alone plus the surroundings where users shoot videos and the stress by heavy handed user. Hope this helps
