I have a sony handycam ccd-trv 308 hi8 analog camcorder and I was trying to transfer videos from it to my computer. However, when I plug the S-video cable to the handycam and my computer, nothing happens. Does my computer require a driver to recognize the handycam because I cannot find any in the sites of sony for my handycam's model. Or am I using the wrong wire?

Will your camera power on with a spare battery or through the electrical adapter ? If so then your camera is fine and the problem is your battery!

This is why manufacturers always recommend to use the supplied batteries and recommended chargers only and not some third party junk. This is why you have batteries exploding on people they don't read the warnings.

Yes it is possible to damage your battery - perhaps your battery cannot take a charge - it is NOT normal to charge a battery for a week !

your battery needs a nominal voltage to remain healthy if you allow it to drain below that voltage you have reverse polarity and your battery is good for the garbage bin.

use the recommended charger from now on and get new batteries.

You require a cable with RCA ends to go to the TV and whatever output is on the Sony, there are several types.
I'd suggest taking the camera to a store that sells cables to get the correct one. Very easy to do with the correct cable.

Hi,
CCD-TRV308 is analog camcorder that can not be hooked directly with computer because computer needs digital format signal to save it on hard disk that will be used to burn dvd disc.
Easiest way is to connect this camcorder with stand alone dvd recorder, it will convert analog video-audio signal into digital format then record/ burn it on dvd disc at same time, once dvd disc is ready then you can copy it in computer for further editing as per requirement to make another dvd disc.
Next option is to install mpeg card in computer that will get analog signal from camcorder to convert it into digital format then it will be saved on computer hard disk for further editing etc to make dvd disc.
Hope these info will help you, I would recommend to have dvd recorder to record your Video-8 tapes on dvd disc quickly without too much trouble.
Thanks.

I don't know what country you are in, so it is hard to advise you. In the UK, I would ask if your TV has a SCART (also known as Peritel) connector on the back. You can get adapters to fit this socket that have RCA sockets on them to allow connection with the leads you have. Analog camcorders used to come with a little modulator box that could turn the video signal into a TV frequency signal that you could tune the TV to. You plugged your RCA connectors into the modulator and the modulator into the TV antenna socket.

If none of those options is available to you, I would suggest that you either pick up a second-hand VCR (they are really cheap now, free even) or get a new TV, with "component inputs" that will accept your RCA plugs.

You will have to use a computer that has windows XP, vista won't support these, I have one like it.
You can either use the cables and plug them into your computer and create a file, which is very large then burn it to disc. Or you can plug it into your DVD recorder directly and put it directly on the disc in record mode. Use your manual for directions.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer video from your camcorder to your computer directly, The camcorder id an Analog device and the computer is digital. You would need some sort of analog to digital converter to accomplish this. There are several devices on the market that will suite your needs, however they can be expensive. The easiest way to achieve this would be to have a " Video Transfer" service put the videos on DVD's and then transfer them to the computer for editing.

If this has been of any help to you please give a positive vote.

Your camera is telling you it needs heads cleaning, just pop into a good camera shop and get a Camera head cleaner tape.
Run it for about 40 sec now and again to keep it in good shape.

This could be a Capstan problem, it is common on lots of cameras like yours, have you run a cleaning cas tape through the camera of late? if not get one from your local shop and put it in and leave it on record button for 30 sec then run it on play 30 sec.
