Monitor only stays on for 3 seconds

There is probably a bad capacitor within the monitor that will not allow the picture to "hold" in the on configuration. This will need to be replaced. You can send it back to Phillips, or 17" monitors are pretty cheap these days. I would suggest a Samsung or BenQ. They both carry 3yr warranties.

Whenever there is a power outage, monitor wont

Your monitor probably detect a power surge when the power comes back and an internal protection is triggered to shut the power input. (breaker).

Try using a surge protector or a UPS.

My monitor is 170s black 17

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Gateway fpd2275w monitor is making a burning smell

Your monitor is broken. If it is still under warranty see if you can send it back to phillips. If it isn't you will problably have to get a new one. This problem may have been caused by a liquid getting into the monitor.

CHANGEING MONITORS

Hi Laura and welcome to FixYa!

Yes, you should be able to change your monitor. You will notice that if you unplug your monitor's cable from the back of your computer, you will see an adapter that looks like the one below (called VGA).

I can't seem to find the specs on the new monitor you mentioned, but most new LCDs (flat screens) have DVI cables, which look like the picture below.

Don't worry, its an easy fix. Go down to your local electronic store and ask for a "VGA to DVI converter". It will look like the one in the picture below. Mine cost me about $8 USD.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Happy Holidays,

Monitor philips 170s

Maybe the brightness and contrast control is not working . If you can open you monitor cover or housing try to adjust the screen control in the back of the plyback usually the plyback is in the back end of the board monitor. there is two hole adjustment the upper one is for the screen adjustment and the lower one is for the focus try to rotate or adjust the two but be careful to touch other part of monitor specially the yoke or the picture tube.
