hi, hook up your old one and change the refresh rate to 60 or 70 hertz, go 2 display properties, then the settings tab, then advanced,then monitor. and set it as i said. turn off computer after you change settings. hook up the nec, you then should be good 2 go. good luck! and please rate this solution. if you need further help, reply.

The only I can think of is the resolution setting that your T400 is putting out that your NEC does not like andcannot display, look at the T42 resolution when the NEC is hooked up to it and try to set it to be the same in the T400.

Hi, if the 17 inch lcd screen is not a widescreen then the problem with the screen is possibly nothing more than the aspect ratio or resolution, which ever way you wanna look at it. All laptops have a widescreen type of ratio, so you will have to be either willing to change the resolution when you switch screens or setup different profiles, which you should beable to do through control panel, appearance and then personalization, you will then have access to it.

Very common for this model that top backlight globe goes faulty.

Need to take the back off the monitor to fix a part
Yes you will need a plastic putty knife or plastic pry bar . You need to find a open space put in the plastic and slide it up and down and around the edge to unlock the plastic locking mechanism that keeps the bottom and top of the monitor casing together. You must do this very carefully so as not to break the locks. If you do break some of the locks. You will have trouble keeping the case closed around the edges. To do this you need a large table space and you need to pad the surface. Place the face of the monitor down and work at separating the back from the front.It take patients. After it is done you will be able to see the power board and main board. They may be covered with a metal heat shield, that will have to be removed.Make sure you take notice of where the screws came from as they may be the only right screw for the hole. You should use anti static wrist bands and gloves to make sure you don't discharge static electricity in to the components on the boards, doing more damage.
