rca stuck in safe mode , how to get it out.

Have you attempted to remove the battery and power from the camera? Usually when a camera is stuck in safe mode if you remove all power from the device and wait a while (I would say 15 minutes should do the trick) it will clear the safe mode and you should be off and running.

Hi at the above link, you will find a myriad of people with a problem exactly the same as yours, it is a real headache, with NO real, well DIY fix, sorry, it appears that RCA will repair it for a price, so maybe it would be simply best to bite the bullet, and take it to a professional RCA servicing center, but ONLY ask for a "Quote". Now when you get this information, then you can make up your mind as to what to do, repair or replace?
As an aside here, and it is mentioned in that link i give you above, that this problem is a "Known About Issue" and in some countries they have been made to repair this issue FREE of charge to customers...
I actually haven't come across this exact type of problem with this exact type of camcorder, however, in my shop, I have seen similar repairs etc, and they can cost upwards of $200.00, so make sure you always get that quote. Further, there are a few postulated "Fixes" in that site given too, you can not do any real harm in trying any or all of them, especially the one about cleaning the "Heads & tape transport path" as described, this may just work, as may the Battery Removal/Replacement ... so good luck.

Safe mode will start when a fault gets detected by camcorder control board.

If there is no fault, and the safe mode was triggered because of a temporary problem, then the camcorder will reset simply by removing battery for one minute.

If the Safe mode does not clear after removing and putting back the battery, and you get an error code, then there is an internal fault.

In your case E02 is traction error. This often happens because of mechanical problems in the tape player/recorder drive unit inside the camcorder.

You can try tapping the side of the camcorder with you hand, with the tape inside. Try also playing with Play, Rew. and FF. buttons, in some case that will unlock an E02 error.

If that does not happen, then there is a mechanical failure. In that case the camcorder must be taken apart and repaired by a technician.

Question edited into written English with punctuation. The lens isn't black, the viewfinder is black. Connect it to a television or computer and see if playback and live recording is working. In that way you know the optics and the electronics are working. The viewfinder is a small LCD display screen with a magnifying glass in front of it. Take it to your local camera shop, they will know someone that still repairs these camcorders. Hi, You can first check for any debris in the video tape player and double check that no settings are stopping the tape from playing (ie a stuck rewind button) . Otherwise, please use the services of geeksquad/bestbuy to refurbish your vcr player. You might also check out BandH (?) video to see if they can refurbish your video tape player. Thank you.

Probably an age related issue. A repair is possible but not ecconomic.

I don't know anything about the vhs camera - other than they produce superior quality, when they work ok. It would be reasonable to assume the tape transport mechanism would be the same as in a vhs video recorder. I remember an engineer telling me there is a post or protrusion containing a light source and sensor that sometimes fails. The purpose of this is to detect a cassette has been properly loaded into the machine and if it isn't working the machine won't work or only partly work. I think the camera is worth saving but I strongly suggest such specialist equipment should be entrusted to a suitably experienced professional specialist.

I am sorry to say that it appears you may have answered your own question, the "hundreds of hours" is the clue. Consider the possibility that your camera is worn out. Sorry.

It appears to have a built-in USB connector, use that.
