Can't get sound to work
Yes you need audio cable, stereo miniphone jacks at both ends (you can get it from Radio Shack) usually green color, plug one end into the green jack on the monitor, another end to the audio line out jack on the PC. Set the volume on the monitor half way up for now and adjsut the volume on your PC to the level you want.

Monitor goes to sleep and wont wake up
That would be an issue with the VGA (if you used a VGA connection) connector issue. Or an issue with the graphics card. Try connecting another monitor, to isolate the issue.
possible hardware issue.

Screen keeps shutting off after a minute of being
first of all it may be a electronic problem so if you didn't understand what i am writing don't worry but you will not be able to solve the problem so you may have a problem with some capacitors in the line or you screen backlight is bad so to test these stuff you need a voltmeter and some knowlge with electronics

A nid drever 17
You do not need driver for monitor, but you do need driver for video card. You just have to make sure to set the resolution on your computer to the monitor native resolution.

I can give you the way to decipher the capacitor manufacturer codes, on the side of the capacitor.
