Screen says check signal cable - have check my cables....
Not really...
First check if the cable connected from the monitor is secured and properly connected to the video card of the CPU.
"Check signal cable" will only be display if there is no signal coming from the CPU.. that signal Passes through the video card..
Check the status of your video card.....and see also if the CPU is working and not dead set.

Samsung SyncMaster 730B LCD monitor isn't backlit at all
Most failure in LCD monitors are due to cheaply made caps being use. If you are going to DIY repair, please read below, or if you are going to have it fixed then at least you will know if you are being ripoff or not.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

I dont have a clue
I don't think your LCD has internal speakers. Does it have a small 3.5mm jack with a speaker symbol (like a headphone jack)? I was looking at a review of your model and there was no speakers listed on the specs.

Display only stays on for about a second.
Look for bad caps with domed tops, see my pictures here:

If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:

this is probably a fault with the internal power supply or the backlight inside of the monitor. in certain Samsung monitors the capacitors go bad in the power supply, these can be replaced by re-soldering identical ones to the power board, which is fairly easy to do if you know how to solder. if that isn't the problem, the back lights have gone bad, which is very dificuly and probably expensive to replace. However, the monitor could be fine and you could have just altered the brightness/contrast or some other settings in the menu on the monitor itself, you could try selecting the factory reset option if it has one. Another thing that could go wrong is if someone has messed with the display calibration settings on the computer itself (unlikely).
