It sounds more like a overheating problem, have you checked the fan is working and is clean?

You may not see option for USB drive unless you have a USB drive connected when you go into the BIOS.

I have a Sony VAIO GRS170/GRS175 in use almost every day since 2003. It used to turn off regularly during hot summer days even with its battery fully charged and plugged in. The problem was eliminated by using a small fan to blow air at its side where the air intake was located. Later, the fan was replaced with a notebook cooling pad which was more convenient. You could first try using a fan to see if it makes any difference. If you don't get anymore shut downs, then the problem is definitely due to overheating. You could then replace the fan with a notebook cooling pad.

It is possible that your daughters laptop has a clogged air intake port or dust build-up on the heat sink which cools the processor. With the laptop unplugged and with the battery out, take a soft Bristol brush to the vent ports on the laptop then take your vacuum with the brush attachment and place over the vent while moving slightly. If this does not help then you will need to have your laptop professionally cleaned by a local dealer.

This update resolves the problem of registered applications not launching from the VAIO Launcher toolbar.
Note: This program requires VAIO Zone 1.2.05 or later. If your VAIO model comes with VAIO Zone 1.2.02, you must first update VAIO Zone before running this program.
Download and installation
1. Download the file SOAVZN-01028300-UN.exe and save it to a download directory
2. Close all running applications
3. Go to the download directory and double-click SOAVZN-01028300-UN.exe
4. The InstallShield wizard starts
5. Click Next and wait while setup is installing the new software
6. Click Finish when the installation is complete

1. Yes, check to see if you have the volume up for the wave file turned up that is on the program you are using to listen to the Mp3 or sound wave with.
2. check the speaker connector/ Use another speaker that is know to be good and test. Use a set of earphone in the output jack also to test the output.

connect the monitor to the VGA output on the laptop - connector looks like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector then connect vga cable to monitor - now on the laptop use FN key + F7 key together and the out put will be transferred to that output as follows each time you toggle the FN+F7 key <laptop screen><VGA output ONLY><laptop screen and VGA output> not in that order and may include other outputs - my sony also toggles the HDMI output if HDMI cable connected

• Also have a look at the F keys and make sure that F7 has a screen on it - just incase your model uses a different F key

Well you will have to contact Sony and see if they will send you a set of recovery CDs - they will charge for this - I know HP & DELL do this theres not much alternative, other then buying a new windows disk if you know exactly what type of windows version you have XP Pro, Vista Home etc and can borrow the CD and then use the license KEY that is written on your PC this is quite legal - BUT you have to use your KEY written on a label on the machine - the version of software is also written on that label

If your fans are running normally but it's still running a bit hot, you may wish to invest in a cooling pad. Especially if you are running your laptop for long periods or if you are a power user. You should be able to find one online with no problems.
