It could be either down to Lack of Memory being allocated to the Audio & Video (Probably the case if the machine has built in Shared Sound & Video Card). Try opening Task Manager and setting the Application that you use to play Music/Movies to High Priority.

Did it work in the past? Are you sure your system can write DvD's? Click Start/My Computer and look at the description of the DvD Drive. Does it say DvD-RW or DvDrw which means it can write a DvD? Look on the side of the laptop at the dvd drive, does it say DvDrw or DvD-RW or DvD Rewritable? If so that means it is capable of writing Dvd's. If it says just DvD or DvD Rom that means it can only read dvd's.Make sure the dvd you put in the drive is blank. I've been on many service calls where they said the dvd was not writing and found out that the media was not blank.
