Runaway print jobs are always a pain! First, power off your printer to stop it from wasting paper. If the power button doesn't work, pull its plug. That will stop the printing for now but your print job will probably restart when the power is resumed.
Whether you are using a PC or Mac, documents that you send to the printer are managed by a printer management service which is responsible for printing documents in the correct order and handling any printer problems that occur. When the printer is turned off, any documents you print will be saved (queued) for printing when the printer starts again. To fix your runaway printing problem you simply need to delete the copy of your large document that is still queued for printing.
On Windows you will see a small icon on the toolbar at the bottom right of your screen that looks like a printer. When you click on the icon you should see a window appear which has the name of your printer in the title bar (e.g. HP Deskjet) and a list of any documents waiting to be printed. To delete a print job, simply right-click on the document name in the list and select "Cancel". When asked "are you sure you want to cancel the document" click on YES and the document will be deleted from your printer queue. Repeat this for all documents in the list until it is empty, then you can restart your printer.
The process on a Mac is similar and even easier since you will see a bouncing printer icon with an exclamation point on it on your toolbar. Click on that icon to see the print queue, click on the document you want to delete and press the DELETE key to remove it.

HP DeskJet 6540 print job stuck in queue
If your computer has a Windows OS, you can clear the queue manually when the job will not delete it from the print queue list. With Windows Vista or Windows 7, you will need to run the command prompt as Administrator. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (for Vista or Win7, right click here and choose Run as Administrator). At the prompt, type "net spooler stop" without the quotes followed by pressing Enter. Next type "net spooler start" (again without the quotes followed by Enter). Restart the computer then take a coffee break before trying to print again. If you don't type the start command, this reset takes even longer after the computer is restarted.Note if you use a Fax machine with the computer, you may need to confirm that this will stop the Fax service as well. If the problem persists, make sure that the USB cable is currently connected to both the printer and the computer. You may want to change ports and make sure that other devices work in the USB ports. (Some computers have an option to disable some USB ports.) If you have a different OS, please add a comment with the OS on your computer. I hope this helps. Cindy Wells
I tried printing text including
2 possible causes:
1 - the ink has started to dry in the cartridges, it has become too thick for the heads to project on the paper correctly and in the end it has clogged the printing heads - replace the cartridges and run several deep cleaning cycles.
2 - hardware fault: either the data cable (the ribbon that connects the print head carrier to the mainboard) has been damaged and it will have to be replaced at a repair shop or the processor of the printer has just failed - this is terminal since it will be cheaper to buy a new one than to replace the mainboard.
To make a pretty exact diagnose of the situation take out the cartridges and see if the printer recognizes the situation when you try to print something. If you get an error message then it's the data cable, if the printer is unresponsive then it's the processor - time for a new one.

When the ink heads move to the home position, that being on the right hand side of the printer. It is met by a mechanism that is there to regularly clean the ink heads to prevent blockages and to give a clean looking print. This mechanism is known to hinder the ink heads from disengaging to perform the print. I am sure it can be repaired, the cost involved depends on the printer technician for his/her time and effort. You will have to contact a few technicians and ask them what they would charge to do the job. They will advise you in the right direction when they inspect the unit.
Take care!

MY HP DESKJET 6540 is not printing. Just hooked
The first thing that I would look at is to make sure the printer is set as the default printer. This is done in "Printer and Devices" in WIN 7 and Via the Control panel ---> "Printers and Faxes" in Vista and XP.
The default printer will have a little check mark by its icon. If its not there, highlight the newly installed printer and right click with the mouse. Then select "Set as Default Printer".
If this does not work try restarting the machine with the printer attached. After the computer has completely loaded the OS, try again.
If this doesn't help re-post with more info.
