See the attached page and look at item 3 as that is the spring. If it is ok, then you could try loosening the screw which secures the motor and then tighening it again. Do so with the tray removed.

Hello,It sounds like the paper pickup roller and separation pad for tray 1 is worn and will need to be replaced. These two parts pickup the paper and weed the pages into the printer. When they get worn down they can grab more than one page at a time. The parts are user replaceable, no need to pay a big repair bill for something like this.
