In most cases this is caused by a currupt or missing driver file. I would obtain the instalation cd or download the newest driver package for your printer from HPs support site, then uninstall the printer and printer software and reinstall it.
Mine is a 8400 and I had a similar issue..which is resolved now.

you may need to re-install your printer drivers. uninstall any old drivers first then re-install the printer. Vista drivers can be downloaded for free from HP.com/support

you need to re-run teh HP 8450 install again to load the utility that allows you to see the printer cartridge levels.

First make sure you are using the right weight paper. On the package it will tell you what weight it is...ie: 20lb, if the paper is the acceptable weight for your particular printer then it is probably the pickup rollers. Depending on the price of your printer (if it is an inexpensive one) you may want to consider just replacing it, due to the difficulty of replacing rollers on many printers if they are even replaceable.
