Light in cover had failed,fitting a new cover solved problem.

You will need to install a new driver. Follow this link to the HP site and download the Vista 64 driver. That should resolve the issue.

What is your firewall setting? Check that and make sure that it is not blocking the scanner.

Go to control panel

Go to add remove programs

uninstall the software for the software

install the software again

Probably not. The 3970 is an older model (started out when Windows 98 was still around), and HP is apparently not going to develop a driver for Windows 7 for that reason.

I know that isn't what you'd like to hear ;-) but I hope it's helpful.

I would hook the connector up to another usb port, if that's the kind of port you used. If this doesn't solve the problem,

I would disconnect, turn off, then uninstall the scanner drivers at the printer/scanner or devices window by deleting it. Reboot, then reinstall the drivers from the hp.com website.
