I have been debating as to whether to buy one of these ice cream units but it appears it would be a big waste of money. I wonder how to track if Kitchenaid has made improvements to fix the flaw in the unit.

That means that the sealing was allowing liquid getting inside the attachment gears, and now it is leaking lubricant from the ice cream attachment. I don't think that the unit can be repaired, the ice cream attachment is all in one block, and I have not seen any part being distributed.

This small appliances have 12 months factory warranty, call Kitchenaid after registering the appliance, you may still be able to validate the warranty. If warranty is gone, complain that the problem was due to factory defect and try to get a part exchange with reduced price on new replacement, or , since warranty expire recently, see if you can buy an extended service plan.

No the problem is from the main control assecmbly which is located on the top of the fridge.
The posibilities are first the solenoid and then board assembly.

No make and model provided but.... Of course it isn't safe to eat!! It is likely a mixture of oil, broken seal dust and a little metal/rust creamed with a drop of condensation. 50 years as as a chef and I wouldn't serve that or eat it. Fix it or thrown the machine away! These machines are normally 20 years old and get used 3 times every 2 years.

limited info generic answer circuit problem -paddle connection fail--cog/gear fail -motor fail need to examine unit to narrow down problem since their many to choose from

If it was fine before stored away, then either the power is not getting to the machine, (rodent damage or corroded contacts) or there is a control fault.
