Agitator-How do you get it off?

My Roper RAL5144AWO Washing Machine, agitator won't spin when clothes are in. Home Depot sent me some parts(reinforcement cupling things-3 discs?) Can't figure out where they go or how to do it. They sent me no directions and I have no manual. How do you get the agitator off? Help?

(Roper is actually made by Whirlpool) This is simpler than it sounds, just takes time and a few steps. Do you have a fabric softener dispenser that resides on top of the agitator? This dispenser simply snaps onto the top of the agitator. Some styles use a decorative cap. To remove the dispenser, simply grab it and firmly pull up. There is a cap that covers the bolt or nut that holds the agitator in place. To remove the agitator cap, insert a small flat-head screw driver into the seam between the agitator cap and the upper agitator (the part that moves). Use a twisting or prying action to pop the cap off of the agitator. Sometimes there is a little slot where you can insert the screwdriver. Look for it first. There maybe an internal debris cap under this: Inside the agitator you will see a cap with a raised handle. Simply reach into the agitator and twist the cap while pulling up. This will remove the cap and its o-ring. Removing the agitator: When looking into the agitator assembly, you will notice a single nut in the center of the agitator. Use a socket kit or nut driver to remove this bolt or nut from the agitator stud. Don't use plyers, it'll just mess up the nut. With the bolt removed you should be able to remove the agitator by simply pulling up. Twist back and forth CW & CCW when lifting. Some are a 2 piece design, so pulling up will actually remove either the whole agitator assembly or only half of it. If whole assy comes up and you may need to seperate the two for your new parts. Place the Lower Agitator on the floor and stand on the flat lip. Then Pull up to separate the Upper Agitator (mover) from the Lower Agitator. As far as your parts go I'm not sure where they go without seeing it myself. There is a spline or ratch assembly which causes the agitator to move back and forth. They are usually made of plastic and get worn or break. This might be what you are replacing. It's not clear as to what parts they gave you. Good Luck

Roper washer does not drain

Washer stopped during rinse/spin cycle. Will not drain in any switch position, but it will spin. If you try to run the washer, water slowly leaks out onto the floor during the spin. Thanks!

Alicia7q : Faulty water pump or restriction in drain line between tub and outlet hose.

arlenekc,: That metal thing is part of the motor. What you have is a leaking water pump.

badwasher,: Check the lid switch. This machine will not spin or drain if the switch is faulty.

Water Won't Drain from Washing Machine

My GE washing machine will not drain water. If you put it on spin the tub spins but will shut off. It was working fine untilmy son washed a pillow that burst in the machine. I noticed today that there is some pillow stuffing that is in the water after the tub gets filled with water. Do you thing that something is clogged. I have a GE Heavy Duty Super Capacity machine with 9 cycles and 2 wash-spin speed combination. I found these two numbeers on the back of the machine, Ser DL154807G aand WHDSR209DAWW. Any ideas?

Hello phylislw61,
If you had an incident where a pillow broke and feathers where dispersed throughout the washer..then there is a good chance that teh drain fiilter screen, pump or hose feeding the pump is clogged. I would verify that the filter is free from anything that would limit water flow from getting to the pump.. then if the problem is still there.. examine the pump itself to make sure it isn't clogged...
If you or someone in your family is reasonably handy, here is a link to your washing machines exploded view and parts and this should provide sufficient information for how to access the pump and associated hoses etc that feed into and out of it for cleaning..
If you are having problems after you verify the lines are free of restriction, feel free to contact me and I will try to assist you in solving your problem.. Here is the link..

A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

NOTE: You do not have to drain the washer to complete this repair. Once the lid switch is adjusted or replaced, the water will drain. This will save you time in having to bail water.

It sounds like you have a motor coupling that is broken. There are videos on YouTube to show you how to repair this. Search for "motor coupling repair on direct drive".
