Dryer runs but does not

Could be a thermal fuse on the back of the dryer. remove the back panel and with an ohm meter check all the components that have 2 wires going to them. one or two of these is the thermal fuse. Also could be the element. it is also in the back and has 2 wires going to it.
The timer may not be working on the auto dry cycle because there is no heat.

I have a very old roper dryer (11 yrs), it quit

You've got an open circuit somewhere in the loop betwixt the start button, the "safety" button actuated by the door, and the motor/heat coils. Trace out those circuits and you'll have that thing running in no time.

Roper dryer will not start

Did you check where the door closes. There should be an accuatator on the door side that will depress a safety switch inside the housing. Take a flat scerw driver & push the lever in on the switch in the housing once you have set the controls to run. This could be the problem, but there could be other problems, Good luck.

Roper dryer won't heat

first thing is check the voltage between the black and red terminals at the back of the dryer. you should read 240v. then check the voltage between the balck and the white and the red and the white. there should be 120v at each. if all that is good remove the back of the dryer. make sure you unplug it first. then no the lower right you will see the heater. near the top of the heater you will see a red wire and a red/with a white stripe wire attached to the high limit cutout. remove one wier and check the switch for continuity. if you read nothing its bad and thats why there is o heat. Ifnit checks good replace the wire and then remove one red wire from the heater. then check the heater with your meter. most times on the whirlpool products its one of the two that is bad. check the two thing I described and if you still need help feel free to get back to me and we can go from there.Good luck

Roper RED4640YQ1 dryer won't heat all seems okay. See comments?

There are normally three devices controlling heat overload, but I don't see them in parts lists. Thermostat, high limit cut out and thermal fuse. The thermal fuse doesn't reset, it basically blows and cuts power. If it is the timer, they are over $200 so call for service so they take the risk on it being right. Then you get the warranty on parts and labour. https://www.google.com/search?q=Roper+RED4640YQ1+parts ..

Roper gas dryer seems to be working fine, however, when you push the start button it makes a growling noise when starting up. Is this the starter switch or something else?

Growling is often associated with bad bearings and centering casters. Remove the access panel and check belt and centering rollers. Great time and idea to vacuum it out at time also
