Hasn't it been used for a while? Sometimes they will stick because of oil build up, which goes sticky and over time rancid. Put the waffle make on and heat it up. It should release. If it is the type with a catch, spray the catch with Easy Off Oven Cleaner and clean with a plastic pot brush.

It is removed from the inside, it is the screw that holds the element to the head unit. I would say you can't get in because of sticky grease or perhaps a tab. Pry the edge up.
The reset can trip if there is a short circuit or the unit is over-heating. Either condition is dangerous. Unless you can locate the problem, for safety reasons suggest replace the entire unit with a new one.
Kudos to the person(s) that identified the safety switch on the housing. Mine would not turn on because the switch would not depress, perhaps the plastic insertion piece on the frame was a little off. I tried wedging aluminum foil and plastic etc, but if you don't depress the black button in the middle of that white shroud on the switch exactly right, it won't work.
My solution was to permanently attach a 1/2 inch deck screw thru the housing so that the screw tip keeps the switch depressed always.
Turn the unit on its left side, use a very small bit to make a pilot for your screw. Very carefully and slowly screw down until the tip activates the switch. I don't believe there is a circuit board or anything in the vicinity, and I left mine plugged in so I would know when I hit paydirt. Caveat emptor and good luck!
