Mine had a lot of stuff built up and burnt out the fan.Now I have to find one I can afford. Thank you all for your help---Jeanie-Marie ps use a 5 or 6 volt power sorce to check the fan to see if it is working--the machine will not start if the fan does not work

Dropped Averatec 3200 laptop and it fell on the
I've had this happen to me a few times. If the pin inside the laptop is bent, then there is no question that you'll need a warranty or shop repair on the laptop to fix or replace the power port.
If the power input coming from the power supply is bent, then you can try fixing it by pushing the plug back into place with a pair of pliers. If this doesn't work, then you'll need a replacement power supply or repair.
I need to re-install xp but do not have a disk.
Check on the Internet to see if your model of laptop has a built-in restore option (this is usually something like pressing F11 or F10 as the laptop starts up, within the first 5 seconds of turning on).
If it does, try following the user manual for using that restoration procedure. These special re-installations are the modern way of manufacturers not having to supply an actual CD of XP - instead your hard drive just has a secret compressed copy of the whole operating system stored on the hard drive (it's hidden usually, so the owner doesn't accidentally delete it off the drive) :)
If you only wish to install a copy of XP again, you can usually just put the CD in (I know you don't have one, but you would have to buy one), and then during the start of the installation, it may offer an option of what drive to install to, and whether to format that drive before installation.
Note that some versions of XP do not allow that kind of formatting-during-installation option though, it will depend if you have bought the correct kind of disk to do a complete 'clean installation', or an 'upgrade version' only.
Hope that helps.

My ACER laptop stopped recognizing wireless
The "Acer ePM" (Power Management) program is probably outting your WIFI into hibernation, Make sure it shows the WIFI as on under "Start" "All Programs"
Most Acers use a form of Intel chipped IPN2220 Wireless card. If yours does, you use XP and your router is using WPA or WPA2 (TKIP or AES) security then you'll need to update the driver by searching for it manually using the Custom button (Hardware) in Windows update (instead of Express). This driver is not part of XP service pack 2 or 3. In my experience if you don't update to the newest common form of home wireless security (WPA2 AES) then the older formats seem to become unreliable in the way you describe
Hard drive gets to hot and computer freezes
Do you do the proper mantainence such as defragging it? If you have enough air circurlation in case, but drive still get hot,you should immediatly back up all your files and purchase a new one. Then use a hard drive imaging(cloning) program and copy your files. Most likely the hard drive is beginning to fail, prior to complete failure.

I had the same problem. It was the motherboard. I think it was caused from over heating. Sorry it does not solve your problem, but at least you know the possible problems.
Cannot get passed harddrive prompt to windows
Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.
