OCR can work on any Scanner, I Believe that the Software is what converts to OCR. I Have A CanoScan N659U. Using Microsoft Office Document Imaging software scanned 150 sheets of genealogy that I do not have to retype. OCR has been around sense about 1928 however, not until about 1974 was the principal used with Flatbed scanners. They do have a few Open source OCR scanning software's available, and they have serval online OCR services. I Prefer the MicroSoft Office 2007 Document Imaging Software myself.

Use any OCR software and it will take care of converting the scanned image into .DOC file or .PDF file. Some OCR softwares require a minimum dpi output, standard being 300 dpi. Ensure that the image is clean and 'straight', deskew if skewed.

Click Start orb and Control panel 4. Make sure classic view if checked 5. Double click Device Manager 6. Under imaging devices right click CanoScan N650U/N656U and select update driver software... 7. Select Browse my computer for driver software and click browse button to location of the CanoScanCSUv571a folder and click on Next button. 8. Ignore any warnings the driver works fine. Have been using it for a long time now

Have been using it for a long time now This will only work with Windows 7 - 32bit OS. I personally reinstalled windows 7 - 32 bit. Had too many problems with the 64bit OS and all by Older software. Could not afford to buy all new hardware and software for use on a 64bit system.

Looks as if that scanner is not compatible with windows 7. Best thing to do to verify it, go to this site:

Even though your running windows 7, choose vista as your OS.

Then download the software and see if it will install. If it installs then your good to go. I've had other hardware that wouldn't work with windows 7 but yet i go to install the vista drivers and i've gotten stuff to work. Give it a try so you know for sure.

I have many years experience repairing Canon scanners and here is my suggestion for you.

I would first go to Canon's website which Im sure you have done already. If they don't have the current driver you need I would send them an email requesting the newest driver for your laptop. They are a very helpful company and im sure they will get you the driver you need.

sorry, none of the solutions listed above worked for Windows 7 on the N650U. will have to keep scanner on a stand alone computer with old Windows

Where can I get a twain driver for Canonscan N650U to work with my windows XP

A solution that you can try (if your CPU has virtualization support): - install XP mode on Windows 7, following the instructions from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7 - using Windows XP virtual sesiion, install the XP driver provided with your scanner and use it as before ! If your CPU doesn't support virtualization, you can try to install a virtual environment of Windows XP using VirtualBox application from Oracle. Scan via Twain plugin (photoshop) for the N 650U is the only solution working for me. Front button stopped working after a needed update 3 or so years ago, don't expect that to work anymore.
I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard on an Intel MPB.

Hi, unfortunately Canon don't provide one, but I've been using this http://www.hamrick.com/ for a while for my 650U and it works great on Win 7 including 64-bit. There's a free trial, so give it a try.

There are no available drivers for windows 7 operating system for your scanner. You can download the official windows xp drivers from this link and before run the downloaded file right click on the file and at the compatibility section check the windows xp sp3 compatibility option and hit apply - ok. After this run the file as usual. This procedure will install the drivers is windows xp sp3 compatibility mode.
