It will cost about $30 to buy a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer. Any computer-store technician can easily "manually" open your current drive, and remove the CD/DVD media.

My cd/dvd does not work.

Your "local expert" should be avoided, at all costs! He (she) has exhibited that he (she) knows nothing. For $30, you can replace the "dead" CD/DVD drive. It is not a "software" problem -- that '$49.99' service probably is a SCAM -- they want your credit-card information. There is NO WAY that they can fix HARDWARE over a network connection. Scam! Scam! Scam!

Take one Norwegian paper-clip, and straighten one end. Put that end into the small hole in the face-plate of the CD-ROM, and push it gently about 1 centimeter. That should "unlock" the drive, and you can manually pull the drawer the rest of the way to fully open it..

helloshut down the computer completely and disconnect power cable connection. make sure all cables to the CDROM are connected properly. If they are , remove the cables. Remove the CDROM, clean it from any dust or debris with air compressor inside bay area and around the connection circuits. Replace the CDROM back into tray and start up computer. If problem persists. go to www.hp.com , retrieve CDROM part number and get a quote for replacement CDROM drive. The one you have obviously does not work at all.

Hi,
There could be a lot of reasons why your drive is not working properly. It could be that there is a service from your burning software that is not running properly thus affecting the CD-ROM. If you have any of these software, try un-installing them.

You can also try this for an automated fix from microsoft.

heres the link: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems

Read and follow the instructions.

Hope this helps.

Cd drive not playing cds or dvds

Sadly if you have tried a number of CD's in this (I'm assuming its a DVD/CDRW drive), then the drive may be broken. If it spins the disc up when you put it in and there are no rattles (indicating a worn bearing), you could try a DVD cleaning disc which will clean the laser lens, which might help, but depending on how old the drive is, there is a chance it is simply worn out

When i try and play

Check the Game CD/DVD requirements. If your game CD is newer than your PC, your PC may not be fast enough or you may not have enough memory - RAM - to satisfy the newer RAM hungry games.

OR one of your RAM modules may have failed. Check System memory summary. If the summary says, ie, 128MB RAM, but you have 2 128MB RAM modules installed, 1 RAM module has failed.

OR your CD Drive may have dirty optics. Insert a CD cleaner disk, run it for several cycles to clean off the optics with the brushes on the data side of the cleaner CD.

The driver for your CD-ROM needs to be UPDATED. click start, then control panel, click performance and maintenance, then click system, click the hardware tab, then click DEVICE MANAGER.under the CD/DVD ROM DRIVES, your CD-ROM should be listed. It may have a "?" mark or "!" to show the driver is out of date. If so, then right click on the device, click the "driver" tab, and click update driver. If the driver is updated, but the CD-ROM is still not functioning, follow the same steps, however; when you right click the device and enter the properties, instead of entering driver, click the "PROPERTIES TAB: and UN-CHECK the box in the DIGITAL CD PLAYBACK. If that does not work, then search online for a driver that is compatable with your windows system,
