1. Check if your battery is fully charge or if there is power in your Compaq Presario 900.

Try this:

With the AC adapter and battery installed and it will not power up remove the adapter and the battery. Then plug in the
AC adapter after both have been removed for 30 seconds and let the laptop set for 30 seconds and then unplug the AC adapter and then slide in the batter within 15 seconds and try to start the laptop.

Check the system BIOS to make sure that the floppy drive is enabled.

Sometimes, when you add RAM, you need to tell the computer that you have, do that by going into the BIOS when you start up your computer. Or it could be a wrong ytpe of RAM! Hope one of these idias has helped you.

Hi! This solution is very late, but I just came across the original post. Maybe it will still do you some good.

You need to replace the display hinges. There are vendors online who sell them (www.blueraven.com for one) but they are expensive. Right now there is a vendor on eBay offering a set cheap. If you see this solution soon enough, check it out here.

First, are you sure it's the backlight and not the "inverter" or the motherboard not turning on the "brite" signal ?
Any way, to fix the backlight, you have to remove the screen from the laptop (in most cases) and then open the screens plastic case. Then, there should be a little circuit board at the bottom of the screen;that's the inverter.Disconnect both wires from it (there should be wires on each side of it).Now remove the screws holding the screen in the plastic case and lift out the screen.At the bottom edge of the screen,you'll find a piece of silver / metallic tape. remove this tape CAREFULLY . Also on the bottom edge there are tiny ( I MEAN TINY) screws at each end of the screen.Remove these carefully lift the metal cover along the bottom of the screen and the backlight is underneath this cover.

Sgta, you have the inverter problem that hadrian had fixed. You just need a new inverter.

Hadrian on the other hand quite possibly has a blown CCFL tube. This is the light tube inside the panel that projects the light.
These even if blown, can still last a minute or two before cutting out.
Thats the good news.
The bad news is it lives inside the panel, and not alot of places will attempt to open the panel to replace it. This is possibly the highest risk procedure for anyone who works on LCDs since the slighest amount of damage to the controller tabs inside the panel that connect to the controller board and it's finished.
Safest bet (and probably cheapest) get a dead laptop from eBay with a faulty motherboard and swap out the screen. You will also get other useful parts from the donor system to keep for the future.

how many hours do you have on that monitor could be lamps or just fusses

Try this:
1. unplugging the power cable
2. removing the battery
3. plug in power cable
4. switch on and start up

If this works, shut down, unplug and replace the battery.

Hopefully your problem is resolved.

Have you recently added any software?

It seems to be looking for a driver, etc and can't locate it, so it is "hanging".

There does seem to be some XP software for your Compaq.

Installing only audio drivers will give you error "DRIVER INSTALLATION FAILED. COULD NOT FIND MEDIA DEVICE FOR THIS DRIVER" .so to solve this problem first you have to download microsoft universal audio driver and then install audio drivers

sounds like a bad screen this might be able to be remedied by hooking the laptop straight to a computer monitor threw the ports provided in the back
also you could have bumped something loose inside like a video card if any cards or memmory comes loose this will give you black screen of death the laptop will have to opened and cards pressed down gently
theres the solution of your power supply on the laptop went out and you need a replacement
if power supply went out it doesnt hurt your comp it just makes it hard to run

change the battery...

another solution, try to re- install OS

you could try booting on battery instead of mains and see what happens, also could the screen be switched off ? If you have access to another monitor, you could try plugging it in to see if the video output is ok. ( some laptops have a facility to switch off the screen display for security etc )

You obviously have power, as lights and at least some text means power is connected ok, as you said. It may be a booting issue then. What OS is running on it when it did run???

This happens so much with upgrades! We think we are making our pc's better, and then find it doesn't like it. I am assuming you completely uninstalled millenium, then tried to load xp? If you did not, the registry still has parts of millenium on it, and is asking for this. You need to completely uninstall millenium first. You need to obtain mill copy, and select uninstall, then when done, put in your new xp disk and try again. Lilacgerry xxx
