have the alternator checked by an electrician a t idle will be low as the exciter circuit will be producing low volts but it should go up when at operating rpms 45 volts at rpms indicates that the field windings of the alternator are not getting full current to produce the desired out put

These rigs are notorious for developing bad connections in switches and wiring, as well as getting stuck or burnt brushes in the generator. Disconnect the rotor field wires at the AVR or on the exciter/brushes. Note they are polaroty sensitive. Connect a 12V battery to F+ and F- (note polarity) and momentarilly power from the battery for a few seconds. DO NOT forget to disconnect the rotor/exciter field wires first or the voltage regulator will be damaged.
