Xp will not install in place of 98. the hardware is too old. Set bios to boot from disk. If you have a rescue disk boot to safe mode and see what the problem is.

compaq is HP so best is to ask them, there, now here. RTC error mean , the RTC coin cell is dead. all PCs this old are dead battery , RTC= real time clock chip says IM DEAD, but is battery dead ,.. remove the coin cell, and put in a new one. end story. then set time . best is to set time in BIOS setup. 1st. this Compaq is 18 years old now. or 126 dog years. id , push it off a cliff on the 4th July with fireworks. and all. let me guess its XP the VIRUS magnet. some this old are windows 98 a hopeless case there, no? no support, no books and no updates. the books at HP are long gone so now all books are , sold by horders. $$$ it can be costly and dangerous to deal with folks like that. the book you lost , , the answer is on page 18 seen here see coin, remove it and put in new one. end story. https://www.manualslib.com/manual/30167/Compaq-Presario-Presario-1255.html?page=21#manual

One thing at a time.
The real time clock is kept on time by a CMOS battery and if the battery goes flat, the time will be lost as will the CMOS data that tells the notebook that there is a hard drive installed.
Replace the CMOS battery first, set the time and date in the BIOS then let the BIOS detect the hard drive.
When the BIOS bit is happy, place a system disk in the DVD Drive and load a fresh OS.

its so we can not install xp in model 1255 it will spoils your hard disk all you can install win98 ED 2 only..... so its wise not to try it and reinstall using win 98 install disk. if format is not possible do format using Fdisk command.
step 1 :enter dos floppy
restart ur lap enter from insulation option.
chance boot perority to floppy disk ie Shift +.
restart lap
enter fdisk in commant

here ..select the operation system and the model if it asks again ...(I already selected teh model but it may ask again)
after that download them one by one and store...beware if you do not have a connection choose to download the full versions cause sometime it just downloads the instant download initiation ...and that will not work when you will need them and not have yet the connection to teh internet ..

In case somebody has the same problem. Result of my investigation: * If everything is ok then the Presario CQ61 boots without battery. * HP support recommends to do a hard reset i.e. remove power supply, remove battery, press power button to discharge everything internally, connect power, press power button In my case the problem was solved by changing the AC Adapter (Power supply). Note: The led besides the power connector is not reliable. It is on with the working and faulty adapter. Note: The voltage level at the battery pins is not reliable. I had same values.

old PC,, Cq series. cq62-nnnnn you left off the nnnnnn cq62-100, 200 ,300 what? running mS windows 8 HP does not support W8 on this PC so that means you are on your own steam... (you , it and microsoft 100%) forget ACER this is not and ACER PC< at all, (totally different) you could reload w8 , like you did before, now all that works its login password issue, can i presume the screens look ok W8login screens? local login fails, not bios, and not windows live logins fails that is right there are 3 tiers of logins. admin , create a new account and use that or do that and ask at MS how to copy date from dead account to new account, you never said once you had data. if no data on pc, then reload 8, easy no? the newer the OS the more hard it is to get data from that dead account( new permission rules, and hard to do) ask best i can tell, lacking your full model number teh CQ62-400 (newest) had only Windows 7 so how did w8 get there, from whome, and what media. and what install methods. from MS CD? or MS ISO, or from ebay hackers disks/ what? here are the ways, (not data recovery) http://www.pcdied.com/passwords.html

Oh dear you have broken this and will need to send it off to be fixed.

Won't load in safe mode?? What's your operating system? Has the hard drive been formatted?

1. Turn off your computer. 2. Press the power button to turn your computer on. 3. Hit F11 a few times quickly, while the launch screen is still up. This will launch the Recovery Manager. (If you see the Windows 7 boot logo, you've missed your chance and need to restart your computer and try again from step 2.) 4. On the left side it will say "I need help immediately". Underneath that there will be an option that says "System Recovery". Click on that. 5. There will be an option to either back up your files before restoring, or to recover without backing up your files. In my case, I'm recovering without backing up my files. 6. It will tell you to make sure all devices are disconnected from your computer. Make sure they are, and then click "OK". 7. There will be a "Welcome to the Recovery Manager" screen. Click "Next". 8. It will begin to reformat your partition and to reinstall the Windows 7 setup files. Once it's done doing that, click "Next". You'll be brought to a page saying "Recovery is Complete". After that all you need to do is reboot, and it will bring you through the wizard to set up Windows 7, just like on a new computer! Good luck :)

THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS to be asked on here as there are so many stolen laptops about ,ull need to go to a repair shop with proof of purchase or something that is on your system that only yourself could identify , to regain access to your laptop..

Try to reinstall windows formatting your Hard Drive... It seems to be an windows crash, or some software.

Drive is formatted with wrong file system. The files you're trying to copy are too big

I'm sorry, are you certain that your power supply is working? If it is, these laptops are notorious for having power port issues. Your power port module may have loosened from the circuit board, inside the casing where you can't see it. Does your power plug wiggle around a lot after you insert it? If so, you may have to take it to someone who can resolder your port back on the board, or replace it altogether.

Which operating system ? Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete After deleting the keys, close the registry editor Reboot your computerOpen My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned.
