let me guess lost the PC it came with>????? other shoe drops.? let me guess need use those custom keys and don't know how. well you need that PC it was sold with. lost? this, even HP and Google can't find it, why mess with PCs this old? with PS2 cable end, why use that? and it will not work on non Compaq PC as PS2 is unique to each maker. no PC even told just found in a garage sale, for 10cents.

Xp had a lot of issues with shutdown early on, but they should have been mostly resolved. 1. Make sure windows is up to date, IE all updates. 2. Make sure all drivers are up to date. 3. Run some anti virus/adware/spyware programs, could be something preventing your computer from shutting down. 4. You aren't unplugging and USB/firewire devices without stopping it first are you?

1. remove that 17 year old shorted huge batter and leave it out.
2. now the RTC coin cell is bad, not one ever ran 17 year ever.
3. next we clean all that lint out of all vents and RAD and fan or it will overheat for sure and all PCs shut off if overheated.,
4. Next test HDD, if its dead no repairs are possible so we fix that next.
5. then load linux best on this old PC, or w7 might work but costs $120 to try it. no free try like W10, at all,

we first buy a new battery. if original that battery is 10 years old today no battery that old ever lasted to today. so....... buy new one it is also the first thing to fail on all laptops./notebooks. most times.

its PC, PC have many layers, of resets. (not counting lost BIOS passwords of any kind,, that adds to the list , ) layer 1, is BIOS reset, seen clearly in the BIOS pages. says there, go back to factory defaults (just BIOS) layer, 2: windows, but you never said which one? XP,Vista, W7/8/10? To reset windows, there is no such thing, in windows at all. ask MS that and get that answer, (then tells how, with media) That means the actual windows, running has no reset. (but one can spend a week or life time cleaning it....) what does this RESET, is the HP recovery process. AKA: reLOADING windows from scratch. the next step for me is carbon dating your PC, it's 12 years old now, 2006 but that is the CUSP year that HP started doing F11 KEY recoveries. so that means i must read the manual to you here goes. bingo Page B12. see link at end, 1st google hit, btw. power on and hammer F11, key verbatim. this works and takes you back to 2006 with all data gone (yours) and all added APPS gone, not HP apps there DAY1, those be OK (reality 101) now how can this fail, sure, easy as cherry pie it can here is the list.

• you changed out the HDD from 2006 to now,
• you upgraded the PC OS not using HP disks or HP media kits. (boom)
• your HDD is bad. run full disk tests now. most this old are bad
• the HDD partition called HP recovery is damaged. super common on 12 year old PC.
• the PC is sick, (huge list here , hardware!!)

the battery is a 47wh, 6 cell,lithium ion battery this is a battery pack made up of 6 separate batteries and what you have a indicates that one of those batteries is failing you will need to get the new pack to fix the problem go on line to Compaq web site spares to get a new one or search on e-bay-- battery for Compaq laptop make sure that you charger is charging before you order as well
