Hi Chas,
sounds like you have a piece of hardware that has a bad driver. If you connected something recently, try disconnecting it and then start your computer. If it starts, then you will need to find the correct driver for it before you attempt to hook it back up again.
If that does not solve the problem, try unhooking all hardware, except for the hard drive with the operating system on it. If it starts normally, then you can turn your PC off and hook up one piece of hardware... start the PC... turn it off again... hook up another... start the PC... etc. until you find the hardware that is causing the problem.
If it does not start with only the operating system hard drive attached... then, the hard drive may be defect. You can take it out and put it in a USB casing and hook it up per USB to another PC... if you see the data on it, it should be ok (just in case, this would be a good time to backup any data on it that you may need). If you do not see the hard drive in Windows explorer then it is probably defect and you will need to purchase a new one.
Hope that helps
My compaq presario 5000 wont turn on all the way,
Hi Kelly,
your computer is trying to tell you that it can not find an operating system (e.g. windows) to start the computer with... that means one of two things... either A) your operating system (e.g. Windows) is corrupt or B) your hard drive is corrupt or not connected correctly.
For A) all you can do is reinstall windows either from the installation DVD or from a Backup that you may or or may not have.
For B) make sure your hard drive is connected correctly. If you turn on your computer and you cannot hear/feel it running, chances are it is not connected to power. (Note: many newer hard drives are very quiet and hard to tell if they are really on or not). Another way to find out if it is working or not is to take it out of your PC and put it in a USB casing and hook it up to another PC, if it is in working order you should see it in Windows Explorer and see the data on it... If not then it is quite likely broken and you will need to get a new hard drive and reinstall windows on it.
Hope that helps.
I have a old dell and the yellow light stays on, what's wrong?
A steady or Amber (Yellow) blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard. Just to make sure that nothing else is causing the problem, remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

fanu,
problem is simple to get rid of.
Enter your bios & disable the Full screen logo found in Boot settings. the 510 splash image is part of the bios.
If this is not what your talking about than give me another description of your problem.
Good Luck & have a great weekend!

Indeed this could realy means either network cable error or network card (lan card) error. Since the lan card is integrated at the motherboard, I suggest you to get the computer at a technician and ask him to install a new PCI - LAN card at any free PCI slot of your computer. The cost is very low (10-30$). So you will have network connection again without changing the whole motherboard or computer.
In case you feel comfortable to add the card by your self into the computer, post me back to guide you for that.
In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before rejecting my answer.
