Changing hard drive / do i have to reinstall os?

If the old hard drive is still working, then you could make an image of it and restore that image on the new hard drive removing the need to reinstall the Operating System. There are several free programs available that can make the image:Easeus Todo BackupParagon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free EditionIf the old drive has failed and you do not have a full backup, then you will need to reinstall the operating system and all your programs and data that was on the old drive.

I NEED THE DRIVER AUDIO

to download the drivers for your crystal eye web cam. Go to this link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=94524

When you get there, select where you see "Operating System", select your operating system (ex: XP, Vista, or Windows 7). It will then show all the drivers for your operating system...scroll down until you see the driver audio software and then download and reinstall it. Hopefully this will help...good luck.

I need step by step on how to upgrade cpu on my

You should replace the unit with a new one. Most new software today requires at least 1Ghz processor, recommended 2 Ghz.

Also, this is not a software update. You must open the box and replace the CPU on the mainboard with another compatible one that uses the socket 370 FC-PGA.

Unless this unit is absolutely necessary for business like running machinery, it should be replaced outright as you can get better hardware for just a few hundred dollars.

No connection from cpu to screen.

by working fine, I assume you mean the monitor goes into its test/diagnostic displays. If that is the case, most likely your roommate has hit upon more or less the correct deduction.
Two possibilites should be attempted before assuming to much more tho, one being the connector from the monitor to the computer, check for bent pins on the connector that goes into the computer. Do not worry about what appears to be a missing pin, that is normal for a SVGA connector, only look for bent pins. If you have one of those, it will have to straightened out CAREFULLY with a small metal tube as exists in some ball point pens or a small tweezer, but please be careful as they are very sensitive to over-pressure.
If a bent pin is not the cause then try reseating the video adapter card in the computer, meaning open the case ( with power off and computer unplugged ), take the screw out that holds the video card in place, pull out the video card and immediately place the card back into its slot on the motherboard. Do not try placing the card in another slot until you see if this works. put the adapter holding screw back into its former position and screw it back into place. Be careful that the adapter is properly seated in its slot, not doing so will result in NO VIDEO or even much worse conditions, such as a possible short on the motherboard, resulting in a fried motherboard. I don't think you want that. If this doesn't fix your situation then chances are as your roommate suggested the video adapter card may be bad, but there is one more possible suggestion that might just work, and that is if the video adapter is a PCI card, you may be able to place the video adapter into another PCI slot on the motherboard, above or below its present location. In a few cases that might help you ( assuming you are dealing with a PCI adapter as there is only one AGP slot on a motherboard. ). Never remove or replace components with power applied or even with the power plug still plugged into the wall socket. Newer motherboard built since 2000 will often still have some voltage applied to them from the power supply if the unit is still plugged into the wall socket.
Come back to me and let me know how it goes. Would appreciate it.

Audio not working

sherylannie,
does your Compaq Presario SR1435IL have the original FreeDOS, or do you have another OS installed? If you still have the original FreeDOS, I would reccommend upgrading to at least Windows XP, depending how much memory you have in it. If you have the factory 256MB of memory, Windows XP should work, but if it's too sluggish, I'd personally reccomend at least 512 MB, but if you want Windows Vista, my personal opinion would be at least 1GB. Or, if you already have XP, click "Start", then click "Control Panel", then "Printers and Other Hardware", then, on the left, you should see "See Also" and click on the first line that should read, "Add Hardware". Click that and you should be able to follow it from there, just follow the prompts. It isn't all that difficult, if you just know where and what to click. Other than that, if nothing seems to help, maybe you can go to HP's web-site at: http://www.hp.com/support/chat, or you might have other options available at: http://www.hp.com/go/assistance. (The only reason I know what little I do, is because I own A Compaq Presario myself, lol. I hope I've been able to help, and if not, try those websites mentioned above.

Windows xp Install

First make sure the hard drive is reconogized in the BIO's, then do a clean install of XP choosing to delete the existing partition and install into the undefined space. choose to format the drive NTFS. if it still fails after this, sounds like you will need to replace the hard drive. Also the CPU speed will need to be at least 700 mhz for XP to work correctly but a higher mhz is all ways better. BPCS

Operating System

well, it probably doesn't recognise that you have an operating system (if you do) because of possibly a corrupted installation...try reinstalling windows on your harddrive, but it's recommended to format anything on your harddrive before you reinstall windows....if you need to backup what you have on your harddrive, you could buy a casing for it so that you can make it external.

Hi, Take the 4 or 5 screws out of the back, then grab the top of the front of the case (the bit that ridges up) then pull that while PUSHING against the CD drive. The front and the casing comes FORWARD. These are the most awkard cases I have seen but once you get the gist of it it's easy. Give it a go then let me know. Dont be affraid to pull hard!!!!

Internal connections

ok for the front cable lights etc. Usually the HDD is place in the left corner. You should see the letters HDD somewhere if it's in a different position. Usually the Power LED light go in front of it away from you. All the lettering on the cables should all face you. The power switch is the most important that has to be placed only in the alloted position. If this is plugged in wrongly then nothing will work. At least with the other 2 we mentioned earlier they only have lights working on the front of your case. They're just cosmetic really.and the reset switch will have it's own position too. With the USB ports There should be only 9 pins. One row with five and the other with four. The one with no pin should be to your right. There should be two cables with VCC1 VCC2 D-1 D+1 D-2 D+2 and ground . Usually the colouring for the VCC is red. They go from left to right. VCC then the negative then the positive and then the earth or ground. There should be a spare pin left and the other shouldn't have a pin at all so 8 pins are covered. Lets hope this all works for you. Note some of the lettering i used may differ from what lettering you see on you motherboard.
