no PC model stated, at all... wow, 1984 to 2014 compaqs. wow. the PSU is bad if the jumper wire test fails easy as eating apple pie, do that test. the voltages in the PC case are safe, 12vdc max. (no do not short out power rails. NO the ATX spec is published in the wiki the first compaq are 20 pin then later 24 so ill do 24 , just wild guessing what PC model you have. why must we beg model PCs' its like saying a Have a FORD car, what ford what engine, see? jump 16 to 17 (17 is ground) do not hot wire power OK (good) pin 8, do not or blow up a good PSU. never hot wire anything you do not understand in this case the pin 16 has pull up resistor 5k, in all PSU made on earth. and you ground it (0v logic) to tune power on. see the schematic in this page, do not blow up IC2. or you will be sorry, I promise. http://www.pcdied.com/power.html#Jumper this works on all PSU made ATX spec. per wiki.

if you want to check your hard drive for errors
you could run the chkdsk utility click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive another way of running the chkdsk utility click start control panel administrive tools,computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now,start should schedule this task when restart do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer then defragment your hard drive also you might download and use this registry cleaner it is totally free to use http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/ hope this helps

Your motherboard has a short circuit with your computer case. Just put motherboard of the case and on it

Get a generic switchable power supply, just look for something like "universal laptop power supply" in the shop of your choice. Be sure to get one with appropriate connector and voltage, at least 120 wats (as that is how much power your laptop will draw, a weaker supply can survive for some time but will fail eventually).

I have compaq power supply "PS2018", Part no 288468-001, and is not working, of course.
The problem is that it will not "ignite", it just starts and stops 0,2 sec later... Where can i look for the cause,

hi... hope this can help....it's the most common for any power supply...RED is for +5V DC, BLACK is for Ground, yellow is for +12V DC...GREEN is for earth ground...in cases for a 12V output adaptor redi is the 12V and black for ground..pls. don't forget to rate and vote ...thanks......

I recommend you do not try to repair the switch mode power supply, Mains voltage equipment are dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.
Switch mode power supplies are not expensive to purchase, I suggest you purchase a new ATX switch mode power supply. There may not be many 120 watt available, but higher wattage power supply are more common, the mounting holes are standard.units

You do not have any choice but to buy a new power supply.

There is, but I would NOT recommmend an untrained user to do it as it can be dangerous.
If you want to know you can unplug the PSU from the PC and short out a specific connector pin (green) with a paper clip, this causes the PSU to turn on and the fans spin.
If that works it usually means the PSU is OK.
But I repeat I would suggest NOT doing this unless you really know what you are doing and take the proper precautions as shorting the wrong pins can be very dangerous.
The best way is to borrow a spare PSU and try it or buy a cheap generic one just to try that out.

There are three possibilities why your HDD(hard drive) is not showing up. 1. Its already a bad drive (failing HDD mainboard). 2. Loose HDD cable inside your laptop. 3. Bad laptop sata port. Hopefully its just #2 but most of the time its #1. Bring your computer to a technician. They will be able to easily isolate the problem. I hope this helps.

The cd may be bad, or if the power supply is just marginal, it may be failing when the cd motor spins up.
